by Andrian Melka in York, England, United Kingdom

We did it
On 2nd May 2021 we successfully raised £32,060 with 265 supporters in 77 days

The project aims to create a statue that captures the hope Captain Tom brought to so many through his inspirational fundraising walk.

 New stretch target

The statue will take around 3 months to make in clay so this extra money would go towards the cost of my time in creating the sculpture.

**Please note, we have now reached our original fundraising target of £28,500 so this project will definitely be going ahead! Any additional money raised (the stretch target) will go towards the cost of transportation, any installation costs and my time in creating the clay statue**

Help us create this statue to inspire patients recovering from brain injury, strokes and long-term neurological conditions at Leeds Chapel Allerton Hospital

Perhaps more than any other person, Captain Tom represented hope and determination during an incredibly dark time in the UK. This two-metre high statue, which when completed will be gifted to Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, pays tribute not only to his incredible fundraising achievements but to his ability to inspire others who may be suffering or feel hopeless to put one foot in front of the other and remain optimistic during the most challenging of times.

The home for the finished statue will be a newly refurbished courtyard garden at Leeds Chapel Allerton Hospital for patients who may have to stay in hospital for many months undergoing lengthy and intensive rehabilitation for traumatic brain injury, long-term neurological conditions or following a stroke. It’s hoped that the gardens will be a calming space for rest and relaxation and that the statue of the 100-year-old war veteran determinedly walking laps of his garden on his walking frame will inspire patients on their own difficult road to recovery.

Chief Executive of the Leeds Hospitals Charity, Esther Wakeman, is delighted to hopefully be receiving the statue and said that “Captain Sir Tom Moore was such an inspiration to so many people and as a proud Yorkshireman, we hope he’d be pleased at having such a fitting tribute to him here in Leeds.”

I am a Yorkshire-based sculptor who specialises in figurative sculpture, portraits and busts in stone and bronze and I’m donating my time to create this piece. The money we are raising is to cover the costs involved in casting the statue in bronze using the foundry Bronze Age in London.

My previous public work can be seen at Chiswick House in London where I worked with English Heritage, in The Royal Gardens at Highgrove, at Bamburgh Castle where I created the figure of Christ on the cross and at St Mungo's Church in Glasgow.

The names of all supporters will be inscribed into bricks on the floor of the sculpture.

Please note, although any money pledged will immediately be debited from your account, if we fail to reach our fundraising target by the deadline date, all money pledged is automatically refunded to supporters.
