Cosmetic surgery is a decision often based on emotion.
Cosmetic surgery is a decision often based on emotion. With so much marketing, it can be difficult for patients to find the independent resources they need to make fully informed choices with realistic expectations.
I co-founded CosmeticSupport in January 2000 and have provided independent non-profit counselling and support services to individuals and groups ever since. I am a member of the BACP. Most patients prefer to speak to someone before and after a procedure who will not sell or market to them. Programmes on television only serve to further exploit patients and celebrities by showing how surgery can go wrong without going into the real detail of how it could have been prevented. Television programmes often assume that when a surgery goes wrong, the problem is purely physical. Cosmetic Surgery and other cosmetic procedures are emotionally driven and can leave people with unexpected results facing a lack of support and judgement by friends, family and society at large.
Neither the industry or the BACP have been very supportive of this service yet most patients who find this service benefit and are grateful to have had the chance to speak about their goals in a friendly informative and trusting way.
CosmeticSupport and CosmeticSurgeryCounselling run a weekly support group and offer individual sessions. We do not charge patients. We are not funded and rely on donations for our service. We need to raise money so that we can afford to offer more services to patients and expand the range of services we offer.
