The project will provide 15 weekly spaces for vulnerable low income families with an opportunity to meet, play and cook and eat a hot meal.
During the pandemic The Carroll Centre set up a food aid base at our community centre in Stanmore and distributed food packs to local families that were struggling financially. In March 2022 we built on this project and opened a dedicated Carroll Food Pantry that now opens 5 days per week. Since we opened we have had a steady stream of new members and a growing need for food and utilities aid. The families that are using our food bank report that they often struggle to make nutritious and affordable meals and do not have the resources to allow their children to experiment with home cooking.
We are aiming to run weekly sessions for 8 weeks for up to 15 families The sessions would provide resources, information and support on how to stretch the family food budget by adding cheaper ingredients and ideas for creating a varied menu from basic ingredients. The session would also give the children an opportunity to experiment and learn basic cooking skills and to create there own masterpieces! Meal would be prepared and eaten communally and we would offer play and social activities during the sessions.
