Launching to coincide with the 80th Anniversary of D-Day at The Control Tower Bed and Breakfast
Saturday 8th June 2024
80 years ago, preparations were under way to set up a new bomber station in a sleeping corner of North Norfolk. Soon 199 Squadron would be training for Operation Overlord. D-Day was the first most secret operation from RAF North Creake.
With so few veterans left to tell their stories, sadly the Second World War is slipping from living memory. However, public interest has never been so strong thanks to huge blockbusters like Masters of the Air.
On a more personal scale, in June this year, Claire Nugent and Nigel Morter are hosting a series of D-Day 80 Events and Special Stays at the Control Tower on the old North Creake airfield to mark this milestone Anniversary which also happens to be the 10th Anniversary of their B&B opening. With crowdfund support, they plan to launch Control Tower Calling - Nigel’s book on the history of this secret station in parallel with the story of Claire and Nigel’s love affair with the Control Tower.
Control Tower Calling – Book Crowdfund
This book details the short, but important, secret history of RAF North Creake; intertwined with the story of how Claire & Nigel found and fell in love with and restored The Control Tower. 12 years in the making, Nigel started to research the history of this station in June 2011 when he first found the Control Tower (after a bad day at work, he googled “Control Tower for sale”). They both immediately fell in love with the building and its history which started to come to them as soon as they moved in.
Nigel, a former academic, has rigorously researched, checked and written the station history. The book details each of the aircraft lost and the stories of RAF North Creake veterans all in the context of the bombing war, alongside the story of Claire and Nigel’s restoration of the tower and transforming their lives from ‘proper grown up jobs’ in the busy South East into Bed and Breakfast owners in North Norfolk.
The Control Tower Needs You – you can be part of this by crowdfunding the publication of this book.
