Aim

Help secure The Garibaldi as a thriving independent pub, creative hub and community space at the of Redhill.

Our Story

For more than eight years, The Garibaldi has been far more than a pub. It has become a lifeline, a meeting place, a creative hub and a warm, familiar anchor in the heart of Redhill. What began as a mission to preserve a much‑loved local has grown into something extraordinary: a truly community‑led space where everyone is welcome, everyone belongs, and everyone has a part to play.

In a time when independent pubs are closing at an alarming rate, The Garibaldi has done the opposite — it has flourished. Not because of profit margins or big investors, but because of people. Volunteers, neighbours, regulars, families, veterans, artists, musicians, young people starting their first jobs — all contributing to a place that feels alive with purpose.

What We’ve Built Together

Over the years, our community has achieved things many thought impossible:

  • Secured over £24,000 in Community Infrastructure Levy funding toward purchasing the freehold
  • Received additional grants from Govia Thameslink Railway and Reigate & Banstead Borough Council
  • Delivered a successful 2024 Crowdfunder, raising £7,800 toward professional purchase costs
  • Expanded our veteran support programme, welcoming 30–35 veterans each month
  • Grown Surrey Choices advocacy sessions from monthly to weekly
  • Introduced new arts, creative and wellbeing activities including still life drawing and storytelling spaces
  • Strengthened partnerships with local breweries, suppliers, artists and musicians
  • Created stable employment and development opportunities for local young people
  • Launched the collaborative Garibaldi Community Brew, highlighting and supporting local suppliers
  • Hosted increasingly ambitious events — beer festivals, murder mystery evenings, live music weekends, seasonal celebrations and more

Every achievement has been powered by the community itself.

A Pub for Everyone

The Garibaldi is now home to a wide range of groups and activities:

  • Surrey Choices volunteers and advocacy groups
  • Fringe Festival events — comedy, storytelling, arts, crafts and live music
  • Monthly book club
  • Games nights, quiz nights and music bingo
  • Art classes and creative workshops
  • Live music and “Garioke"
  • Community Table events at Easter, Christmas and other holidays — ensuring no one spends special days alone

We’ve invested in the garden space and welcome groups that assist us in its upkeep, and continue to expand our wellbeing and creative programme.

Supporting Those Who Served

One of our proudest initiatives is the Forces Fry‑Up, now in its third year. Each month, 30–35 veterans join us for breakfast, conversation and connection — with special Christmas gatherings designed just for them. For many, it has become a lifeline.

What People Say

“The Garibaldi gave me somewhere to belong when I was struggling with loneliness.”

“It’s one of the only places left that genuinely feels welcoming to everyone.”

“You’re not just saving a pub — you’re protecting a community.”

“The veteran breakfasts have become a lifeline for many people.”

Why We Need Your Help Now

We are now at the final, defining moment of this journey:

the chance to purchase the freehold and secure The Garibaldi’s future once and for all.

Thanks to years of determination and community support, we’ve already made huge progress — including securing a 60% mortgage toward the purchase. Now, we need to raise the remaining £150,000 to make community ownership a reality.

Without ownership, The Garibaldi remains vulnerable — to redevelopment, to closure, and to the loss of everything we have built together.

With ownership, we can protect it permanently as an independent, community‑led space where people come to connect, celebrate, find support and feel at home.

This isn’t simply about preserving a building.

It’s about safeguarding a vital community space — a place where friendships are formed, confidence grows, loneliness is eased, and memories are made. A place that has already changed lives, and will continue to do so for generations to come.

With your help, we can take this final step and secure The Garibaldi for good.
