A catering-standard refurb of our community kitchen for shared meals and cookery workshops, plus wider improvements for our 50th anniversary
by The Salisbury Centre in Edinburgh, United Kingdom
On the 27th December 2021 we'd raised £8,684 with 28 supporters in 49 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.
Since 1973 the Salisbury Centre has brought together mind, body and spirit in a myriad of different ways. At our heart is the desire to support wellbeing, hope and life. A space for people of all spiritual perspectives (and none) to connect, share ideas, and take inspiration.
As we approach half a century as a community space, our beautiful listed community building (a welcoming and tolerant old soul) is in sore need of refresh and renewal. The kitchen in particular needs bringing up to date and to be fitted out to a catering standard for use by our community and other organisations across Edinburgh to offer community meals and workshops.
Community meals are at the heart of bringing people together, to exchange ideas, stories, cultural perspectives. Through shared meals, we celebrate the cycles of the earth and its seasons, and the earth itself through sustaining ourselves from its produce, including from our community garden.
Food is also a way to nurture ourselves and our wellbeing, and our community kitchen offers an opportunity to learn about nutrition and how to cook for ourselves and our loved ones.
As we come towards our half century, we want to renew and celebrate, and look forward. Concerns about climate change can feel overwhelming and disempowering. We want to be at the forefront of minimising that change and offering practical solutions, including by offering opportunities to explore lower-impact locally grown food options
We’ve always been lucky to survive on generous donations from our community, so have never before needed to do an active fundraising drive like this!
Your kind donation will help us to renew the centre as a high-quality resource for the people of Edinburgh long into the future, by helping us to restore and renovate much-loved features of the centre that are in need of care, in particular the community kitchen. Any remaining funds can be used to restore the cupola, the library, and to improve the décor and furnishings throughout the building.
By ensuring these things are cared for to a high standard, we will ensure they are robust and sustainable for years to come. How much we raise affects what we can do – and that’s where you come in! Please share this crowdfunder far and wide - the more people contribute the greater capacity we can add to our community kitchen and the centre as a whole.
