About
Our project takes place at the Cottonmill Community Centre off Cottonmill Lane. It supports vulnerable older adults, living in the Sopwell area of St Albans. The Sopwell community lacks facilities and has the highest number of Black, African, Caribbean, and Black British residents in St Albans. In Sopwell 643 households rent from the council, which is the highest number for any ward in St Albans.
A vision that began post pandemic
Our project began in June 2022, supported by Hertfordshire Community Foundation. That funding how now run its course and we are seeking additional funding to continue to run the very successful cafe.
Many older vulnerable people became very isolated and lonely during the pandemic. Even those living with families were isolated from friends and peers beyond their immediate household. This cafe provided a solution. Especially as there are no coffee shops within the community where people can meet (these are in town centre).
Our project has given people opportunities to re-connect, form new friendships, and socialise in a warm and welcoming environment in the heart of their community on a weekly basis throughout the year. This helps to reduce isolation and loneliness.
The opportunity to meet, socialise, and enjoy conversation and gentle activities on a regular basis gives participants a reason to leave the house, improves mood and motivation, and helps to reduce anxiety and depression.
What we need funding for
The money this Crowdfunder makes will supports the delivery of our community cafe (52 sessions), venue + catering costs and pay our kitchen staff.
Testimonials
"I was in nursing for over 40 years so now with nothing to do, being here is very good for me and my self esteem. I’m doing something that is worthwhile and I’m happy doing it. I’m enjoying it" - kitchen staff
“It’s a very warm and welcoming club, you get people from all walks of life. I personally have met some lovely people who I would never have met in my lifetime, it’s for the young and the old and young at hearts." - regular attendee
“I go with my dog walking friends, it’s something we all really look forward to, our bacon roll Tuesday, I have recently caught up with a lady I haven’t seen in over 30 years. It’s an amazing place to have a catch up and a laugh and a joke, real hats off to everyone who makes this the community that it is.” - regular attendee
"We need it funded because it brings people together, everyone is friendly and without it so many people would be at home alone. People come just for the company and the laughs we share and would miss Tuesday club. Also the tea, coffee, cake and bacon rolls are great!” - regular attendee
