Comfort for Unpaid Carers: holiday home furnishing
We did it
On 16th July 2024 we successfully raised £75 ( + est. £13.75 Gift Aid ) with 5 supporters in 56 days

We need your help to furnish our carer holiday home so that we can give them a much-needed break in a warm and relaxing house.

Project by Gateshead Carers

Carers deserve a break; help us give them a place to unwind.

Since 2015, unpaid carers have taken free short breaks from their caring role, giving them time to de-stress, relax, and enjoy the Cumbrian countryside at our charity holiday home: Caldew House.

Over the last 9 years, the house has hosted hundreds of holidays and is now in great need of a refurbishment. We need your help to breathe new life into the property with fresh furnishings.

Who would be helped by my donation?

Unpaid carers. They sacrifice so much of themselves to look after their loved ones - we believe they should have the opportunity for a break without having to make any more sacrifices.

"60% of the UK population will provide unpaid care at some point in their lives".

Unpaid carers support their family and friends who need them across all health and social care needs such as: Dementia, mental health issues, cancer, physical disabilities, Autism and learning disabilities.

Unpaid carers;

  • provide over 100+ hours of unpaid care per week.
  • suffer much poorer mental and physical health because of their caring role.
  • are likely to give up work entirely to care for their loved ones.
  • feel socially isolated.
  • are twice as likely to use a food bank compared to the general population.
  • desperately need a short break from their caring role.

Who are we?

Gateshead Carers is a charity that supports over 6,500 unpaid carers across the borough. Unpaid carers provide support for loved ones who are disabled, frail or ill. As part of our support offer to carers, we provide a free 4-night retreat to our Cumbrian holiday home.

Why do we offer carers free holidays?

Carers work tirelessly, often without any breaks or time off from providing care for their loved ones. This regularly leads to burnout, exhaustion, and reaching breaking point before they contact us. We offer free holidays as we believe it is essential that they are given the opportunity to take a break from their caring role and have some time to relax, focus on their own needs and recharge.

Where will my funds go?

100% of all funds pledged to this fundraiser will be spent on purchasing furniture and furnishings for the holiday home. This will include comfortable beds, cosy sofas, and dining sets, allowing us to create a home away from home for carers.

By supporting this fundraiser, you are not only providing physical items but also giving carers the gift of self-care and much-needed time for themselves. Your contribution will make a meaningful impact on the lives of these dedicated individuals who often feel not recognised and not valued.

Thank you for taking the time to read our appeal. We hope you will support our cause to give unpaid carers a much-needed break.
