My Action and imprisonment
I have been involved in all sorts of direct action for a few years, in local campaigns, for Palestine and for climate causes. In June 2024 when I was 22 I broke into a private airport and spray painted two private jets to demand action against the climate crisis and prevent more harm against the earth and humanity. I was in police custody in a freezing cold cell over 3 days before being remanded to prison to await trial.
After an application for bail I was released from prison under some of the strictest bail conditions possible, including non-association, attending the police station during the middle of the day every day, an ankle tag and a twelve hour curfew. I lost my job and my bail conditions made it impossible to get a new one, even one where I would work at home! I was forced to sign on to benefits to live and pay my rent, but, like all people on UC I was barely getting by. The level of stress my bail conditions and treatment in prison caused me, led me to develop such strong physical tension in my body that it triggered the development of symptoms and pain that are now with me for life, that have taken my freedom, my independence and my ability to work.
Wrongful arrests and development of my chronic pain and disability
Around a week after being released from prison I was wrongfully arrested for a tag malfunction, despite being able to disprove it to the tagging company (a company does make money of off this!) I was still arrested and threatened with being sent back to prison. While I was on bail I was wrongfully arrested 5 times, including for going to hospital during a medical emergency after 7pm (my curfew start). I was arrested in the middle of the night in my pyjamas less than 24 hours after being discharged from hospital. I was in so much pain and so immobile that a male police officer had to kneel down in front of me and put on my socks and shoes for me. I showed them my paper work from the hospital, proving I had left my house legally, they still arrested me. Still I was handcuffed behind my back, I was led to their car and taken away. Like a twisted joke a few weeks later I got a knock on my door from two police officers who were there to arrest me again, for breaching my curfew due to being in custody for the previous wrongful arrest. I explained the situation, and was still arrested. This happened many more times.
In custody for my wrongful arrests I was denied medication, denied painkillers and denied the right to see the custody nurse (this happened in my hospital related arrest). I was also accompanied for my shower by an uniformed man.
During the period of my wrongful arrests, discs in my spine herniated, I lost my mobility, I lost the ability to do daily activities, I developed extreme chronic pain and completely relied on the care of other people to survive. My symptoms were so severe that I couldn't even shower or lift up a kettle. This treatment by the state has completely upheaved my life. I am still in fear at all times, even now after my trial. I have a panic attack every time someone is at my door, I cannot sleep through the night, I have nightmares every night about being in prison or being arrested. I cannot rest because I am still in pain.
How you can help
I have set up this crowdfunder because I am desperate for a fresh start, for a new home in a new place where the police have never arrested me. The cost of disability aids, physiotherapy and counselling for my PTSD are high and I would be incredibly grateful for a relief to some of the burdens I have been left with.
The goal was calculated to cover: a deposit for a new (rented) house, start of rental contract costs, the first few months rent, moving costs (as I am not physically able to do this) and some additional money to cover physiotherapy, disability aids and other living costs. Any money I do not spend will be donated to CASP and DAAM Support, so other activists in my position can have support too.
