Using Climate Oxide to engage the Bristol community in visioning more sustainable futures for the city and creative local solutions to climate change.

Climate Oxide

Climate Oxide is a collaboration between Dutch/Canadian photographer Robert van Waarden and Dutch/Nepali artist Shiva Rimal focused on climate change. Using rust, photography and industrial design, the work interprets the corrosion of environments and offers a unique perspective on climate change.

Posing questions about how we obtain our energy and how we deal with the impact that our extraction of resources has on the natural environment, the exhibition covers some of the most prominent issues in the global debate on climate change and energy (e.g., the Canadian tar sands). Through highlighting these, Van Waarden and Rimal want to inspire people to build a sustainable future.

If funded, the exhibition will be open to the public from 9am to 5pm every day during Big Green Week, Bristol, June 15-23, 2013.

Big Green Week

Big Green Week is the UK's foremost festival of eco ideas, art and entertainment. Taking place in Bristol in June, it attracts more than 40,000 visitors across nine days of inspiring talks, workshops, art, music, poetry, comedy and films.

The Venue

First floor gallery at The Architecture Centre in central Bristol.

Engaging the Community: Art for Change Workshop - Envisioning the Future

As part of the show, the Art for Change workshop will use the Climate Oxide exhibition as a starting point to inspire participants to consider impacts of industrial development on the local landscape, including climate change and energy use, as well as what kind of sustainable future Bristol might create.

Robert van Waarden and/or Shiva Rimal will participate in the workshop and talk about the making of the exhibition and their collaboration. With their input, the workshop will also consider how art can be used as a means of community engagement and visioning for a sustainable future.
