CLIMATE RESILIENCE CENTRE WORTHING

RCN 1198526, Worthing

CREW’s goal is to support local communities across the Worthing area in mitigating, preparing and adapting to the impact of climate and ecological damage. We aim to provide information, support, advice and guidance through activities, events, workshops and installations in our centre. Equally important, we aim to provide creativity, connection and, most of all, hope for the future.

CLIMATE RESILIENCE CENTRE WORTHING

There are many groups in Worthing striving for a better and more sustainable future, fair to all members of society and to the planet we live on.

The Climate Resilience cEntre Worthing (CREW) brings together these local environmental groups, and has opened in Worthing town centre thanks to a group of ordinary people motivated to create hopeful community action.

CREW aims to inspire, inform and empower the community to respond to the climate and biodiversity crisis at a local level.

We are raising money for:

  • Running costs of the centre which provides facilities for the community to use

  • Creating a warm and welcoming space that local people want to visit

  • Facilitators to run community wellbeing workshops

  • Equipment and resources to show films and share information

  • Training volunteers to give them the knowledge and skills to advice and inspire others

  • Developing an outreach programme to reach different kinds of people

  • Website development and social media to reach more people

What is it?

Climate Resilience Centre Worthing (CREW) has taken an empty shop in South Street and transformed it into a community space. It is a climate emergency centre, one of forty in a national network. CREW brings people together to adapt and find solutions to the climate crisis.

We will enable individuals, families, community groups and businesses to make more sustainable choices, reduce their carbon footprints, protect and reconnect with nature, and live in more regenerative and caring ways.

Ultimately, this means our community will become more resilient, prepared for and adaptable to the changes that are happening now and in the future.

What do we do?

There are a lot of local groups who are already working on sustainability projects here in Worthing. Having a central hub will:

  • Enable them all to come together, share, mutually support each other and make their projects more visible.

  • Allow the public to meet, learn about and join these groups as volunteers

  • Make it easier for everyone in our community to understand the changes that we can all make and support people to make those changes.

  • Provide an inspiring and effective template for other climate emergency centres around the country to adopt.

Active hope

Thinking about climate change and ecological breakdown on your own can be scary and overwhelming. Taking individual action sometimes feels too difficult, inadequate or even pointless.

CREW brings individuals together in a fun, inclusive and accessible way that creates a stronger, more connected community response to the major problem of our times.

We do this by offering:

  • workshops on sustainability and regeneration

  • a meeting space for environmental groups

  • an information hub

  • climate cafes

  • wellbeing and emotional resilience sessions

  • an educational outreach programme

  • speaking events

  • film evenings

  • repair cafe sessions

  • energy and retrofit advice

  • a creative space for reimagining and developing new solutions

Topics covered in our workshops and the information hub:

  • Local groups already taking action, e.g. Transition Town Worthing, Extinction Rebellion, Green Tides (a coalition of conservation groups)

  • How to shop, travel and eat more sustainably

  • understanding and measuring our carbon footprints

  • renewable energy options

  • insulating and retrofitting our houses

  • campaigns to bring about change at national and international levels

  • growing and buying food

  • carbon sequestration

  • rewilding;

  • wellbeing and emotional resilience

  • repairing and recycling

  • reducing plastic and pollution

Why does it matter?

Community action is important because we are facing an unprecedented threat to life on Earth. Climate and ecological breakdown will severely affect our ability to live comfortably or perhaps even to survive if we do not make changes now to the way we are living. Food supply, clean water and abundant energy are all at risk.

We can reduce those risks if we start making positive changes not just as individuals but across whole communities. We don’t need to (and cannot afford to) wait for governments to make the changes, we can start now.

Who are CREW?

The Climate Resilience cEntre Worthing (CREW) is a new registered charity inspired by the Climate Emergency Centre network which encourages the setup of more such centres around the country.

CREW is run by the trustees and is an alliance of many local groups including Transition Town Worthing, Green Tides and Worthing Climate Action Network. We also have a growing team of volunteers who have been busy decorating the centre and preparing a launch event.
