Aim
Help communities across Barking&Dagenham become better prepared for climate risks and other emergencies, while building stronger connections
Who we are
Thames Life Community Development Trust convenes the Barking & Dagenham Community Resilience Network, working closely with the British Red Cross and LBBD Civil Protection Team. Thames Life is also a community partner on the Borough Resilience Forum, helping connect community resilience work with the borough’s wider emergency planning and preparedness.
The Community Resilience Network is open to everyone. It provides a space for residents, community groups, local organisations and wider partners to support each other, learn together and take collective action.
The idea
Barking & Dagenham has been named a priority area by the British Red Cross because of how vulnerable it is to emergencies and climate related risks. Extreme heat, flooding, and severe weather events are only becoming more frequent. Rather than waiting for a crisis to respond to, we want to build resilience from the ground up, led by the people who actually live here.
Our vision
We want Barking & Dagenham to become a leading borough for climate resilience. A place where neighbourhoods know how to prepare, respond, and recover together, and where that capability is built into the fabric of the community rather than relying solely on emergency services when disaster strikes.
How we'll use the funding
Every pound raised goes directly into supporting practical, resident led action:
Training local Community Climate & Resilience Champions who can lead on the ground
Creating Neighbourhood Climate Ready Plans tailored to each area's specific risks
Mapping local community assets and volunteers so help can be coordinated quickly
Preparing communities specifically for heatwaves and flooding
Strengthening resident led climate action across the whole borough.
With Aviva matching every individual donation up to £250, your contribution is doubled, turning a £250 donation into £500 of direct local impact. Aviva will match donations up to £25000. In addition, London Resilience will also match donations up to £2000, helping us deliver community climate resilience activities.
