Running a half-marathon to raise funds for The People’s Recovery Project, tackling homelessness and addiction.
Hello all! Very shortly, I'll be running the Hackney Half Marathon to raise money for The People's Recovery Project, a charity supporting people experiencing homelessness and addiction to access residential detox and rehab.
As those of you who know me personally will know: I'm not much of an athlete! However! I have tried my hand at getting into running on a not-so-strict training regimen in the hopes of completing the Half to raise funds for this amazing cause. It was only three years ago that I couldn't run for more than a minute, and now I am so proud of the prospect of (hopefully) being able to stick out 21km. What better way to celebrate this than to share the support and generosity that I've experienced on my training journey with those for whom it could be life-changing.
Opportunities for recovery are extremely limited for people living on the streets, despite the fact that when people are given the chance, the results can be life-changing. The project creates real pathways into sustainable recovery, designed and delivered by people with lived experience. In the current paradigm, we know that drug-related deaths are increasing, and opportunities to access recovery are extremely limited for people living on the streets. However, when people have access to residential detox and rehab, the results can be transformative for the individual concerned.
The People’s Recovery Project is inspired by real journeys made by individuals experiencing homelessness and addiction through treatment and into recovery. These examples are currently the exception, and through shared purpose, our community is seeking to make recovery achievable and sustainable for people in this situation.
The People's Recovery Project's mission hits a personal note for me: I have been sober for close to two years now, and my world has become an infinitely bigger and brighter space for me to inhabit! I have been so privileged in the support I have received from family and friends along the way, and I am so grateful for the chance to be able to provide others with funding towards integral support along their recovery journeys.
If you're able to donate, I'd really appreciate your support. It will provide some motivation and, in the bigger picture, support this amazing charity.
