Aim: Help us paint a vibrant nature-inspired mural on the fence of Clapton Park Children's Centre, to inspire and uplift our neighbourhood!

Our gateway to nature needs some love

At the end of Daubeney Road stands a well-trodden footbridge – a vital link between Lower Clapton and the green expanse of Hackney Marshes. It’s not just a path; it’s a daily route for the children of Clapton Park Children's Centre and Hackney Forest School, who cross it on their way to outdoor learning and adventure.

But the area around this gateway is in a sad state. The fence of the Children’s Centre is covered in graffiti. The adjacent flower beds are enclosed by broken rails and full of dense growth, plastic sheeting and litter - not the welcome into nature that our community deserves.

Our plan: a mural that reflects our love for nature

We want to transform this neglected corner into something joyful and inspiring – with a vibrant, nature-themed mural transforming the Children’s Centre fence. Local artist Claire Ward-Thornton of Art Hoppers will lead the design and creation of the mural, drawing inspiration from the natural world and the spirit of the local community.

Alongside the mural, local charity ecoACTIVE is leading a separate (already funded) renovation of the adjacent flower bed and surrounding area as part of the Hackney Buzzline – an ambitious initiative to create a flower-rich green corridor linking Hackney’s parks, supporting bees and butterflies, and encouraging people to connect with nature. The mural will reflect and celebrate this wider effort to make Hackney a more biodiverse, beautiful place.

Your donations will cover the artist's costs, as well as the necessary specialised external paint and materials, and we're planning to finish the work before the end of September.

Why it matters

This project is about more than paint. It’s about giving our neighbourhood something to be proud of. It’s about creating a space that feels cared for, welcoming and alive with nature.

The mural and restored flower bed will offer a brighter, more peaceful environment for everyone who uses the bridge – from families and dog walkers to joggers and cyclists. It will help discourage vandalism and littering and signal that this is a space loved by the community.

We want to see this space thrive – as a biodiverse, colourful and inclusive part of Hackney’s green network, and a beautiful invitation into the wild spaces beyond.
