About the project
Following on from last year’s successful Open Air Cinema in Plymouth, we want people all over Plymouth to enjoy a great evening watching a film in an interesting and iconic location. We’re planning a whole season of Cinema in the City film events for this summer and need to raise money so that these film screenings can go ahead.
We had some great feedback from last year - "Thank you for providing such a wonderful event - the like of which I thought could only be experienced in London (or some other larger city)." and "I will definitely attend a future outdoor screening and will tell my family and friends all about it."
Why do we need the money?
We’re asking for your help to pay for some of the costs involved in putting on these cinema events. It costs £7,000 just to put up the scaffolding for the screen at Royal William Yard, as well as the projection equipment. We need to employ professionals to get the sound right at a variety of different venues so that everyone can hear. We also need to pay for the boring essentials, like toilets - essential for an enjoyable evening; First Aid cover, security and we have to pay the film distributors a percentage of what we receive from the ticket sales.
We can offset some of these costs by charging for tickets and we've had some funding already lined up, but we still need to raise £5,000 to make sure these fun film nights happen.

What films will be shown?
Last year at Royal William Yard, we screened Roman Holiday, Sing A Long A Grease and the summer blockbuster, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. It’s still too early to say for certain, but the films will include some old classics, favourites and hopefully a recent release. Dirty Dancing is definitely on our shortlist!
The film screenings will be preceded by a series of short films, produced by Magic Hour, a young person's film and photography social enterprise based at High View School, Efford which document and create film about art and local community work in Plymouth.

For every pledge received, we can claim an extra 50% on top from Arts Council England, which will be invested in Cinema in the City and other arts and cinema projects in Plymouth. Our fundraising for Cinema in the City is part of a wider range of fundraising activity which Plymouth Arts Centre has planned.
