Aim
Provide a free Christmas meal and company for socially isolated, lonely and vulnerable community members and families in the Frome area.
Fair Frome was started 11 years ago, in response to the growing needs of residents affected by poverty. We are an Independent charity with 1 full-time member of staff and 2 part-time, and 9 Volunteer Trustees.
The Food Bank was the first project and then gradually over the years we have developed various other hands-on projects in response to the needs identified in the community: the Furniture Bank (we try to repair cookers and washing machines first before buying new and we recycle items), School Holiday lunches, help with school uniform, Food at 5 hot meals 3 times per week in 3 different venues across the town started in 2019), Baby Basics bank (started in 2022), Community Pantry (started in 2023 to allow access to a low cost shop for a 6 month period on a weekly basis). Due to the increased demand after covid we managed to secure new premises in April 2023, so we are now able to offer showering and washing facilities to those who are homeless rough-sleeping or in temporary accommodation, a Health Inclusion GP service, Housing advice sessions, Digital Health Connector drop-ins, Citizens advice drop ins.
The community of Frome came together 18 years ago and wanted to create an event on Christmas Day for people who would otherwise be on their own. Local shops, businesses and volunteers donated their time, cooked food, sang carols and gave gifts to guests and celebrated the day together - and so was born the annual Frome Christmas Get-Together.
This time of year can be challenging for all kinds of reasons, so we welcome individuals, couples, families from all backgrounds who are struggling financially, as well as anyone who feels isolated or lonely around that time of year.
2025 plans:
For the last few years we have seen a growing need for our service, both welcoming guests in person on the day and delivering festive meals directly to people’s homes (if they are housebound or unable to join us for any reason).
We’re aiming to provide 200 festive two-course meals with all the trimmings, along with individual gifts, transport to and from venues, carol singing, games, entertainment and company on the day.
We work closely with other organisations in town to coordinate publicity and personal approaches to anyone who is on their own on Christmas Day, for example, the YMCA Frome Foyer, our Fair Frome events, The Good Heart Cafe, The Bridge Cafe, Health Connectors, Housing Associations, Care Homes,Schools, the Health Centre, Citizens Advice, Age UK, local charities and community support groups.
Money raised will go towards the costs of providing food on the day including; turkey crowns, potatoes, pigs in blankets, parsnips, carrots, brussel sprouts, cauliflowers, sage & onion stuffing, gravy granules, cranberry sauce, cheese for sauces, vegetarian roast, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, chestnuts, custard, cream, Christmas puddings, savoury snacks (like crisps, twiglets, festive nuts), mince pies, chocolate biscuits, hot & cold refreshments (tea, coffee, hot chocolate, warm spiced apple drink, juices & squash).
Guests who have a meal delivered at home, will also receive festive extras to make their day extra special, including; cheese & biscuits, a selection of drinks with milk/sugar, snacks and festive gifts.
We create bespoke meals for individuals, couples, families and special diets including gluten free, diabetic, vegetarian, vegan and coeliac requests.
Other items required include; Christmas crackers, table cloths, napkins, take-away gift boxes for food, presents, table decorations, venue room decorations (christmas trees, lights, hanging decorations, tinsel).
