I’m running a flash fundraiser- me and my collaborators need your help, with the release of our debut queer alt-rock single and music video!
My story:
Hi there! My name’s Katherine and I’m a queer and non-binary independent musician and artist.
I’ve been writing my own songs since I was 11 (old enough to teach myself to play my mum's guitar!), and I have dedicated my life to trying to learn everything there is to know about music production. I’ve worked really hard to pursue my individual artistic vision, in an industry where the odds are against me.
I have so many songs waiting to be heard, and it’s my dream to release them into the world for you to hear.
But releasing music as an independent musician is really challenging. The market is saturated and it’s hard to get your music heard if you don’t have a big budget. There's a real danger that the song I worked so hard to craft could disappear like a drop into the ocean! I think it’s really important that marginalised artists from disadvantaged backgrounds, like me, have a chance to make music and be heard. Please help me get this project off the ground!
I’d describe my debut single as dreamy and nostalgic, influenced by classic and garage rock. It has a retro vibe, and it’s about both the euphoria and disaster of romantic infatuation. My collaborator Veronika Neputina has crafted the perfect music video to accompany the song-- it's a dreamlike narrative of queer love, and metamorphosis into strange creatures!
My Plan for my Debut Single Release!
-I recorded my debut single, “Chimeras Tonight (Too Mercury)” by myself on a shoestring budget, doing all the sound engineering myself as well as the production.
-It’s essential to have a music video for a music release nowadays, so I scoured the internet to find an independent artist who could help me bring my song to life with visuals. Late one night on Instagram, I stumbled upon Veronika Neputina. Her imaginative and quirky animations are perfect for my song! I commissioned her to make me a music video.
Why I Need Your Support:
-I have plenty of experience as a professional musician, and I know that nowadays you can’t just release a song and expect it to succeed-- no matter how fantastic it is-- since the market is saturated. You need a budget to promote the song; to magazines, bloggers, radio stations, music video film festivals, and on social media (Instagram, FB, YouTube).
-Radio stations only take you seriously if you have live gigs lined up and a strong online presence. This requires pulling a band together, rehearsals, and booking tour dates. This is all very costly and labour-intensive! I need to pay for rehearsal space, musician fees, transport, gear and more.
-I intend to make the most of Veronika’s amazing artwork, and print merchandise (T-shirts, tote bags), to sell on Bandcamp and at live gigs. This will promote the music and be an ongoing income stream for all the artists involved.
