Support us in creating a Scottish indie short film exploring motherhood and its taboos inspired by Scottish and Nordic folklore.
In a remote Scottish valley, a worried mother seeks help from a wise woman to cure her mute son. As she enters this mysterious landscape, she begins an archetypal journey—one that forces her to confront the repressed and complicated emotions of motherhood.
Changeling is an independent short film written and directed by Juulia Kalavainen, and co-produced with Rebecca Palmer and Morag McKinnon from Earthing Productions.
We are a passionate team of professional filmmakers, artists, and two emerging trainees working together to bring this atmospheric modern folktale to life.
Help Us Reach Our Goal
We are raising £3,000 to reach our total production budget of £12,500.
Thanks to Creative Scotland’s Crowdmatch matchfunding, every donation can be doubled - meaning your contribution has twice the impact in helping us make this film.
This film explores motherhood's taboo feelings, acceptance and integration through the changeling folklore. A changeling is a prominent figure both in the Celtic and Nordic countries, and I'm excited to weave these elements together into an atmospheric modern folktale. The film is also deeply inspired by the landscape itself. The story emerged from the striking natural environment of the Scottish Borders, where the film will be shot.
Our Team
We have a skilful crew consisting of 9 different nationalities. We're excited to get to work with a female-lead crew, of which many are mothers - and some of us are even working alongside our mothers on set!
Changeling is a passion project, and a collaboration between filmmakers, local artists and people who care deeply about storytelling, environment and craft. By supporting this film, you directly support the people who are bringing it to life.
Environmental Approach
Our production is committed to working as sustainably as possible within our means. This includes:
- Using recycled and thrifted materials
- Hiring local crew and working with nearby locations
- Serving home-cooked plant-based food
- Avoiding unnecessary new purchases and plastics wherever possible
Giving Back to the Land
We care about the landscape where we are filming. To give something back, for every donation of £75 or more we will plant a tree in Phenzhopehaugh, Scottish Borders. If you want to support the regrowth and rexwilding of the Scottish Borders landscape, consider choosing the Tree Planter reward below.
