Celebration of Robert Tressell
We did it
On 23rd February 2016 we successfully raised £1,840 with 120 supporters in 28 days

Help restore the grave of Robert Tressell; a working class hero, whose voice of compassion has taught many to hope for a better future.

Robert Tressell is the author of The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, a withering indictment of the working conditions of ordinary people in Hastings in the Edwardian period. The book has inspired millions to better understand capitalism and to work to bring about an equal and fairer society. His grave is in need of restoration and we fundraising to have the lettering re gilded so people can pay their respects and learn about a man who battled poverty and ill health to write a masterpiece.

The grave is in a sorry state and we want to restore it and make it the place of pilgrimage that it should be. We would also like to raise awareness of his book and the important messages that it has to teach us today. The money will be spent on regilding the lettering on the gravestone and a tidy-up of the area. We would like to put up appropriate signage so people can be directed to the site and learn about Tressell's life. Any excess money will be donated to the annual festival that honours his contribution to Socialism

It is hoped that the work can be completed for the 28th April as there is a celebration of his life going on at the site, which is currently occupied by Rice Lane City Farm.
