This Ceilidh is being held to support a charity called Ukraine Relief (https://www.ukrainerelief.org.uk), which is providing emergency aid to those suffering from the Dnipro River flood caused by the collapse of the Kakhovka dam on the 6th of June 2023. See the Ukraine Relief video below:

Ukraine Relief is registered UK Charity No. 1199809.

A Ceilidh is a traditional Scottish or Irish social gathering. In contemporary usage, it usually involves dancing to live folk music provided by a Ceilidh band. Dancing is usually done in couples who dance in sets of four couples, facing each other in a square or rectangular formation. Dancers change position and dance with other partners in the set, while at the same time keeping in step with the music. The dances are simple and fun, and instructions will be given. Music will be provided for our Ceilidh by the Cambridge Contra Dance band.

Since the collapse of the Kakhovka dam on the Dnipro River there has been major flooding in Ukraine. I am hosting a family of four from Kherson, a region that has been badly affected. My Ukrainian guests have relatives and friends who are still there, whose descriptions of the situation corroborate the reports we have heard in our UK media. People badly need water, food and other necessities. Many animals have been lost or displaced, and huge environmental damage has been caused.

Please come along to the Ceilidh if you can, but even if you cannot come, any donations to this cause will be greatly appreciated.
