First Prize

The first prize is 'That Feeling', an original oil painting by Ella Starling, professionally framed in a dark wood, ready to hang. 

‘That Feeling’ captures the intensity of love felt for a child, that can bring with it a profound sense of vulnerability. The feeling of our life force existing outside of our body, bound to a small, fragile being.

This painting comes from 'Raising Her Voice: A Collective Portrait of Motherhood', the project I have just concluded which was an Arts Council Wales funded project exploring the less visible sides of motherhood.

Third prize

The Cause 

I'm Ella Starling, a figurative painter, mother and activist from Pembrokeshire, Wales. I am crowdfunding for 'Ceasefire', the largest and most ambitious painting I have ever made. An approximately 5m x 2m oil painting, across 4 panels, reinterpreting Picasso's 'Guernica', in response to the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

'Ceasefire' comes from feeling sickened by the fact that one person's life-shattering events are another person's scroll fodder. I wanted to create a lasting record, to honour the lives and the gravity of what we've been witnessing. It is my attempt, as a painter, to do what painters have always done in the face of atrocity and bear witness. 

The funds raised through this prize draw will go directly towards the costs of making the work; materials and studio rent. Whatever is raised above the target will go to All Our Relations and Gaza Formula Fund, who are both brilliant organisations continuing to provide direct aid in Gaza.
