Our long-term ambition is to commission a new boat for the future of the club, at a cost of over £30,000.
On the 6th of September members of Cattewater Gig Club will be rowing 100K, in Plymouth Sound, from dusk until dawn, to raise money for two great causes.
Formed in 1996, Cattewater Gig Club is an open-water rowing club based at the Mount Batten Centre. We row traditional Cornish Pilot Gig boats in the Plymouth Sound National Marine Park, and attend racing regattas throughout Devon & Cornwall.
Foodbanks are being stretched to breaking point across the country with 1 in 5 people living below the poverty line, and the Plymouth Foodbank is no exception.
Based at the Oasis Centre in Stonehouse as part of the Trussell Trust network, this foodbank has seen a 45 percent rise in service users in the last year, with 40 percent of those, in full time employment.
There has also been a dramatic drop in donations, meaning the team must now find £2500 each week to feed the people of Plymouth. With both food and money donations dwindling, this essential service is in peril.
With 60+ club members, we race competitively across Devon and Cornwall, and each spring, attend the World Pilot Gig Championships based on the Isles of Scilly. The sport caters for people aged from teens to 60+ years.
Our traditional hand-crafted boats need constant maintenance, and running costs can be high.
Our beloved boat ‘Drake’ is in urgent need of work, and our long-term ambition is to commission a new boat to secure the future of the club, at a cost of over £30,000.
All proceeds will be split 50/50 between Plymouth Foodbank and Cattewater Gig Club.
