Project aim

A well signed/resourced road cycle network with Carlisle at it's hub exploring 500mi of quiet roads & stunning scenery. Great for locals & tourism. The project organisers are giving their time for free but they need funds to pay for the branding development, website template and a prospectus. These resources will be key when presenting the project to national cycling organisations, regional tourist boards, the city and county council and the plethora of businesses who's support we will need to help deliver a first class result.

About the project

This project was inspired by Carlisle Ambassadors. The aim of the project is to boost local tourism revenues and to make Carlisle an even better place to live. The idea recognises the huge national growth in cycling and plays to our strengths by creating a stunning network of well signed and resourced road cycling routes along our plethora of quiet lanes, taking in some of the best scenery and villages that we have to offer. There will be an epic 200 mile circuit to rival the popular C2C route with with multiple radial routes linking Carlisle at the hub to the epic circuit (500 miles in total). This structure would enable people to either ride the whole epic circuit over a few days or to enjoy a series of shorter day rides starting and finishing in Carlisle. The network would be well marketed to cyclists and families all over the UK and also key markets abroad (such as Netherlands and Belgium) and would be backed by a dedicated website to help users to simply plan and execute their trip. Users would be able to download maps and GPS files, explore accommodation and food & drink options, discover attractions to visit and locate key services such as cycle shops and bike storage facilities. The city council would be encouraged to provide city centre secure bike storage and safe cycling corridors in and out of the city to ensure safe access to the network and for cycle commuting. The aim is to launch the network in Spring 2016.

The £3000 will be used to fund the early stages of the project including the route development, the branding of the network, the creation of a website template and a prospectus to present to key stakeholders including the national cycle organisations, Cumbria County and Carlisle City Council and the various people and organisations who will need to be inspired to make this happen. Donations are speculative at this stage but all people and organisations supporting the project will be recognised on the Carlisle Ambassadors website and the CRCN website when it is launched. The expectation is that the project will funded on an ongoing basis by grants, sponsorship and advertising. The project organisers are running the project for their city and not for money!

The project is currently being run by Richard Wise (a Carlisle Ambassador) with the help of Chris Dale and with the support and encouragement of the Carlisle Ambassador steering committee and many others. Thank you for your support and if you think you can help, please let me know!
