EN ~Two carers; a disheartened young immigrant and an experienced but irritable Scottish lady strike up an unlikely connection, while they struggle to give people the care they deserve under their private agency’s command.

EN ~ This story is inspired by the writer/director’s own experience of working in the home care sector during the Covid-19 pandemic. The story addresses the brokenness of the private care system, in which profit rules over the wellbeing of vulnerable people. The overworked, untrained and underpaid carers are unable to provide the care that the patients deserve. Yet, our protagonists find the courage to do what they feel is right through the newly found friendship. It’s a story about overcoming prejudice and the beauty of solidarity.

Nasz film skupia się na dysfunkcyjności prywatyzacji sektorów społecznych, w których zysk góruje ponad życiem i potrzebami ludzi potrzebujących. W systemie, gdzie w dużej mierzej przepracowani, niedoszkoleni i niedostatecznie wynagradzani pracownicy opieki, robią wszystko co w ich mocy ale nie są w stanie zapewnić pacjentom odpowiedniej opieki. Jednak nasze bohaterki znajdują odwagę, żeby zrobić to co czują, że należy, dzięki ich nowo zawartej przyjaźni. To historia o przezwyciężaniu uprzedzeń i pięknie solidarności.

Story: 

EN ~ Hania is a young, Polish immigrant with a big dream of becoming a musician but having to work extra shifts to make her ends meet. She is new at the job and still not accustomed to the sight of so much illness, death and bodily fluids. Lorna has worked in this field for many years. The difficult conditions of the job and the long hours are taking a toll on her health and private life. When she needs to work with Hania, yet another temporary colleague without the experience, she doesn’t have the patience for it. They go from home to home to provide the care service to their patients but are unable to give them the time they need, as the agency tracks their every step and keeps rushing them. Among their patients there is Margaret, a lovely and lonely old lady who longs for personal connection. During one of the visits, the carers are being rushed to leave Margaret early, which leads to an upsetting accident.

PL ~ Hania jest młodą, polską imigrantką z wielkim marzeniem o karierze muzycznej, lecz ledwie wiąże koniec z końcem. Jest nowa w świecie choroby, śmierci i płynów ustrojowych, i wciąż jeszcze do przywykła do ich częstego widoku. Lorna pracuje w tym sektorze od lat. Trudne warunki pracy i długie godziny odcisnęły piętno na jej zdrowiu i życiu prywatnym. Kiedy przychodzi jej pracować z Hanią, kolejnym tymczasowym zastępstwem bez doświadczenia, Lornie brak cierpliwości. Razem udają się od domu do domu dostarczając podstawową opiekę chorym i starszym ludziom, bezustannie popędzane i śledzone przez agencję. Jedną z ich pacjentek jest Margaret, miła i samotna starsza pani, która łaknie ludzkiego kontaktu. Podczas jednej z wizyt, Hania i Lorna są zmuszone skrócić wizytę Margaret, co prowadzi do nieprzyjemnego incydentu.

CARE is a film that touches on essential pillars of our society, the care of the vulnerable, kindness to your neighbour and solidarity. 

We are also aware that many people have been affected by the care service, whether it is the care of an elderly relative, a friend who’s been employed in the service, or simply moved by the heartbreaking conditions these workers face. Now, more than ever, the stories and experiences of carers should be told, particularly as we see the National Health Service shift from public to private. 

Moreover, your donations directly implicate the quality and nature of a graduation film. Your support big, or small is an investment in these upcoming film makers who aspire to continue championing stories that matter to you.

Making a film is an expensive business! With your support, CARE will be able to offer a fair set that prioritises crew welfare. Whilst this is a student production, all crew are donating their valuable free time to the film; as such significant portions of our budget is allocated to crew care and travel expenses. Cast payment is our largest fee. Beyond that all costs are spilt into crew departments, the largest being world building visual elements such set dressing.

CARE is a graduation film created by 4th year BA Film (Hon) students at Screen Academy Scotland/ Edinburgh Napier University. All core members of the crew are students, or trainees who have come together to tell a story that reflects our crew's mentality and talents! 

Whilst our shooting is made up of over 20 people, here are some the Head's of Departments who have been with us since day 1.

Hi! My name is Jagoda Tłok, I am a Polish writer and director based in Scotland.

My work focuses on the stories of women and especially their acts of rebellion and survival in various oppressive systems. My 2021 documentary "You Will Never Walk Alone" was screened at the 69th Edinburgh International Film Festival's 'New Visions' strand, which touches on similar themes of community and fighting for equality under difficult circumstances.

CARE is a story that has been shaped from my experiences as a care worker during the Covid-19 pandemic. With the sector remaining crippled since the pandemic, now more than ever stories of carers must be told.

W mojej pracy skupiam się na historiach kobiet, a w szczególności ich aktów buntu i przetrwania w różnych opresyjnych systemach. Mój dokument z 2021 ‚Nigdy nie będziesz szła sama’ został wyświetlony na 69 Międzynarodowym Festiwalu Filmowym w Edynburgu, w sekcji ‚Nowe Wizje’. Ten film również opowiada o solidarności społeczności i walce o równość w trudnych warunkach.

CARE to historia, która powstała dzięki moim własnym doświadczeniu pracy w sektorze opieki podczas pandemii. Od tamtego czasu stan tego sektoru wciąż pozostawia wiele do życzenia, dlatego ważne jest dla nas żeby dzielić się historiami jak ta.

Hello! My name's Jess Kelly, I am a producer and AD from the North of Scotland.

Having fallen in love with filmmaking in 2018, I have produced over 10 short films and worked as an AD on several more.

As a short film producer my hope is to produce stories that feel personal and engaging, that transport viewers into the character's world. On set I aspire to create an inclusive and creative space that facilitates every crew member's personal aims.

I was attracted to CARE for precisely these reasons and can't wait to create a production that reflects the values of every member of the group, and the sincerity of the story Jagoda has created.

Od kiedy zakochałam się w filmie w 2018 roku, wyprodukowałam ponad 10 filmów krótkometrażowych i pracowałam jako druga reżyserka na planach filmowych.

Moim celem, jako producentki krótkich filmów, jest opowiadanie historii, które są osobiste i zajmujące, i które przenoszą widza do świata bohaterów. Moim priorytetem jest tworzenie planów, które są inkluzywną i kreatywną przestrzenią dla wszystkich członków ekipy.

Właśnie te elementy przyciągnęły mnie do pracy przy CARE i nie mogę się doczekać by stworzyć produkcję, która odzwierciedla wartości każdego członka ekipy, i szczerości z jaką Jagoda opowiada tę historię.

Howdy! My name is Euan Farmer, I'm a cinematographer from the Scottish Borders.

Over the past few years as a film student I've been cinematographer on a wide variety of projects, but I'm most passionate about short drama films.

I enjoy finding new and unique ways of portraying everyday and domestic environments, and giving different moods and atmospheres to spaces through creative use of lighting.

I'm really excited to be working on CARE and helping to develop the look and feel of the film.

Cześć, nazywam się Euan Farmer i jestem operatorem filmowym ze Szkockich Granic (czyli południowej Szkocji).

Przez ostatnie kilka lat w szkole filmowej byłem operatorem przy wielu różnych projektach, jednak najbardziej pasjonują mnie krótkie filmy fabularne.

Ciekawi mnie odkrywanie nowych i unikalnych sposobów uchwytywania zwyczajnych miejsc i przestrzeni, jak również dodawania im różnych nastrojów i atmosfer poprzez kreatywne użycie światła.

Hi there! My name is Juno Glover, and I'm a production designer and writer based in Edinburgh.

Most of my own stories are based around mental health and social issues which I believe need more attention, which is why I'm so excited to be working as production designer on CARE!

As a production designer I've worked on a wide range of projects, from fantasy to realist. I'm a stickler for the small details which are able to give more subtle insight into characters. I hope to be able to do the same on CARE, and can't wait to see how it turns out.

Większość moich własnych historii jest o tematach związanych ze zdrowiem psychicznym i problemami społecznymi, które zasługują na więcej uwagi. Dlatego właśnie bardzo cię cieszę, że mogę pracować przy CARE jako osoba scenograficzna.

Pracowałom w tej roli przy wielu różnych projektach, od fantasy po realizm. Jestem zafiksowano na punkcie detali w kostiumach i scenografii, które pozwalają na bardziej subtelne zrozumienie postaci. Mam nadzieję, że to właśnie uda mi się osiągnąć w CARE i już nie mogę się doczekać żeby zobaczyć jak wszystko się razem łączy.

Hi!  My name’s Alyssa Calder and I am an editor and script supervisor from Edinburgh. 

In my time as a film student I have been given the opportunity to work on a range of great films, both in fiction and documentary.  However, in recent projects I have found myself drawn towards fiction, specifically drama.  

Having worked with Jagoda before, I was looking forward to hearing about her next project.  After learning of CARE, I knew I wanted to get involved.  Given Jagoda’s personal connection with the story and her eloquent construction of the characters, I look forward to using the edit to create the space needed to explore their story.

Cześć! Nazywam się Alyssa Calder, jestem montażystką i nadzorczynią ciągłości z Edynburga. 

W szkole filmowej miałam okazję pracować przy różnych świetnych projektach, zarówno fabularnych jak i dokumentalnych. Jednak to fabuła zdobyła moje serce. 

Oczekiwałam ze zniecierpliwieniem na wieść o nowym projekcie Jagody, jako że pracowałam już z nią wiele razy. Kiedy usłyszałam o tym filmie, od razu chciałam się zaangażować. Dzięki osobistemu podejściu Jagody i jej wymownej konstrukcji bohaterek, nie mogę się doczekać żeby użyć montażu filmowego żeby stworzyć przestrzeń potrzebną do opowiedzenia tej historii.

Howdy! My name is Joseph Flower and I’m a sound designer based in Glasgow. I’m really excited about the opportunity to come back to work with this team for CARE, after graduating last year from Napier. I am interested in stories exploring the topic of work. Jagoda has an appreciation for the use of sound as a tool for dynamic expression in film and I’m excited to work with her to weave together elements of sound and music to achieve her vision.

Ciekawią mnie historie, które poruszają temat pracy. Jagoda bardzo ceni sobie dźwięk w filmie jako narzędzie do osiągania dynamicznej ekspresji, co jeszcze bardziej sprawia, że nie mogę się doczekać żeby stworzyć poprzeplatać ze sobą elementy dźwięku i muzyki, żeby spełnić jej wizję
