Thank You Gifts for Cardiff's Key Workers

FOR Cardiff have committed to funding the donation of at least 100 of our £25 FOR Cardiff gift cards to the city’s key workers to say thank you for all of their hard work during this difficult and stressful time.

We’re encouraging the public to add to our thank you fund with 100% of donations going towards delivering more gift cards to as many of our key workers as possible.

We know that everyone is currently indebted to a lot of brilliant hard-working people who we will never know, potentially never meet and definitely never be able to thank face to face.

FOR Cardiff gift cards are redeemable all across the city centre so whether your donation finds its way to a pharmacy technician or a delivery driver, a bank clerk or a care home assistant they’ll be able to visit the city and buy themselves something they’ll love, on you!

Why are you doing this?

Like everyone else we’re immensely aware at the moment of the pivotal role our key workers are playing in supporting the nation through the outbreak of COVID-19 and want to play our part in thanking those workers.

As an organisation we exist to help ensure that businesses in Cardiff are able to thrive and so giving those key-workers a gift card to spend here in Cardiff when the lock-down is lifted is a win win for us.

Are you making money out of this?

No. FOR Cardiff is a not for profit organisation, our legally binding business plan states that we are unable to turn a profit. All of the money donated through this Crowdfunder will be loaded onto gift cards to be spent in the city centre by key workers.

What about when the gift cards expire?

Our gift cards expire one year from activation at which point any remaining balance on the cards is returned to us. We hope that all the money on cards donated to key workers will be spent before his happens.

Should any funds be returned to us they will be used to help support the maintenance of the gift card programme: card load fees, the costs associated with selling cards, the licence to run the scheme etc. To date the money we receive through this element known as ‘breakage’ has not covered the costs of the scheme.

We have also committed to donating 20% of the breakage from cards loaded as a part of this scheme to Give DIFFerently, the fund we manage which helps move people in Cardiff away from homelessness.

What if you end up with a figure that isn’t a multiple of £25?

FOR Cardiff will round up the total figure donated to the nearest multiple of £25 – all money donated by members of the public through the scheme will be used for the stated purpose.

How will gift cards be distributed to key workers?

The exact process of distributing gift cards will depend on the total funds raised through the campaign.

FOR Cardiff has strong existing links with various organisations providing key services within the city centre and will be able to utilise these links to distribute our initial donation of 100 cards across a broad range of workers including supermarket staff, pharmacists, public transport operatives and many more.

It is important to us that the scheme remains as accessible as possible to key workers whilst also ensuring that your own donations are not given to false claimants. We are committed to openly publishing the details of our distribution and updating you along the way.

Shouldn’t key workers be appropriately rewarded by their employers?

Yes, of course they should. We are an accredited living wage employer and believe firmly in providing a fair wage for a fair day’s work.The gift cards we, and potentially you, will be donating are in no way intended to compensate for inappropriate pay or working conditions. We also understand that we are living in exceptional times and many members of the public would like the opportunity to provide an additional personal level of thanks to the key worker teams that keep our country running.

Please note that the current live list is made up entirely of independent Cardiff businesses however after consulting with our independent business subcommittee last year we made the decision to expand the scheme to include all businesses within the FOR Cardiff area. This work is currently ongoing and so there is a possibility that funds donated to this scheme will be spent in any business within Cardiff city centre in the future and not just those currently listed.
