HELP US ENGAGE WITH YOUNGER PEOPLE AND ELDER GROUPS WITH AN LGBTQIA+ FOCUS IN THE REGION. BY FOCUSING ON CREATING CONVERSATION THROUGH EXPLORING MOVEMENT, THIS FUNDING WILL HELP ENGAGE WITH MARGINALISED COMMUNITIES, WHERE THEY CAN BENEFIT FROM CULTURAL EXPERIENCES IN A SHARED SAFE SPACE.
Dear Friends and Allies,
We are asking for support as the ensemble moves forward with the engagement portion of The Poe Saga, where we are looking to deliver workshops in educational and community settings, championing and celebrating LGBTQIA+ communities and voices in the North East of England. We aim to provide this platform to engage with as many people in the community as possible, through the compelling and immersive retelling of the tales of Edgar Allan Poe.
Having previously reached 253 people with The Poe Saga’s work, this additional pocket of funding will support the delivery of workshops exploring themes of Edgar Allan Poe’s work and their connection with LGBTQIA+ voices, to champion their experiences through movement and discussion.
** This funding will further provide opportunity for those who may not currently have access to arts provision through the allocation of bursaries, reducing barriers to high quality arts experiences. **
A recent participant shared their thoughts with us:
“Voyeuristic and unsettling while strong and romantic showing the relevance of Poe’s writing in the modern era”
The Poe Saga explores our inner landscapes, through stories such as Man in the Crowd and actual outer landscapes and environments, through among other tales, The Descent into the Maelstrom, referencing climate collapse. It is both gothic and contemporary, unsettling and beautiful, a rich and multi-layered project and performance allowing audiences and participants to enter Poe’s world and make it their own.
“Dora Frankel’s choreography is meticulous, every glance and gesture communicating an intention, with a satisfying balance between repetitions and ephemerality.” – Pagan Hunt, Commotion
