Building Pathways Together is a community programme supporting vulnerable residents to build skills, confidence and pathways into employment
Newham Community Project has been supporting the community since 2008, working closely with residents facing poverty, isolation, inequality, and barriers to opportunity. Many of the individuals we support come from underrepresented and ethnically diverse communities and are often excluded from opportunities that many people take for granted.

Every week, we meet people with skills, ideas, and potential who want to progress but do not always have access to the support needed to move forward. Some are parents returning to work after many years, young adults lacking confidence, migrants and refugees rebuilding their lives, or residents facing financial hardship, poor mental wellbeing, language barriers, caring responsibilities, or social isolation. Many have never had access to mentoring, employability support, digital learning, or spaces where they feel comfortable, included, and encouraged.

Building Pathways Together was created in response to what our community continues to tell us they need; practical support, confidence, guidance, and opportunities that feel accessible, achievable, and genuinely supportive.

Many of the people we support are not lacking ability or motivation; they are lacking access. Mainstream employability services can often feel overwhelming, difficult to navigate, or disconnected from the realities many residents face. Some individuals have experienced long periods of isolation, low confidence, poor mental wellbeing, or setbacks that have affected how they see themselves and their future. Others may have qualifications, experience, or transferable skills but lack digital confidence, recent work experience, professional guidance, or the encouragement needed to take the next step. We regularly meet people who have spent years focused on survival, caring responsibilities, or rebuilding stability, leaving little opportunity to focus on their own aspirations and future.

We believe that when people are given safe, welcoming, and supportive opportunities to learn and grow, it can have a lasting impact not only on employment outcomes, but also on confidence, independence, wellbeing, and community connection. Small steps such as attending a session, speaking in a group, creating a CV, learning digital skills, or applying for a role can become significant milestones for someone who previously felt excluded from opportunity.

The project will provide welcoming and community-based sessions focused on employability, digital inclusion, communication, confidence-building, teamwork, mentoring, and wellbeing. Participants will receive support with CV writing, interview preparation, workplace confidence, and progression into volunteering, training, education, and employment. Alongside practical skills, the project will help reduce isolation and create a sense of belonging, encouragement, and motivation.

What makes this project different is the way it is delivered. Our support is culturally inclusive, trauma-informed, and built on trust. Many of our volunteers and staff have lived experience of the same challenges faced by the people we support, helping participants feel understood rather than judged. Sessions will be designed to feel accessible and welcoming, particularly for residents who may feel intimidated or overlooked in mainstream settings.
Funding raised through this campaign will help us provide accessible workshops, learning materials, digital support, outreach, volunteer mentoring, refreshments, and safe inclusive spaces, including practical accessibility support where needed, so residents can fully participate and take positive steps towards their future.

Our vision is simple: to ensure that people who have been excluded from opportunity are not left behind, but are supported to build skills, confidence, independence, and pathways towards a more stable, connected, and hopeful future.
