The children of Mthawira Primary School in Malawi need your help to build two new classrooms and brighter futures!

Project by Think Malawi

We need your help!

Think Malawi is raising £2,000 to build two new classrooms at Mthawira Primary School, Malawi.

This project aims to address one of the most serious barriers to education in rural Malawi - the chronic shortage of classrooms.

At Mthawira Primary School, there are 1,413 students but only enough indoor space for 922 children. Many children are being taught outdoors, where dust, distractions and often extreme weather conditions make learning difficult. Each year, this impacts on the educational development of hundreds of children as their learning is hampered by searing summer heat or rains in the wet season.

The lack of classrooms severely affects the school—students struggle to learn, dropout rates are high especially during rainy season, and both staff and the community are left demotivated.

One student at Mthawira Primary School has shared her experience of learning outdoors:

"It is very tough learning in the outside classroom when it's raining. Though our teachers dismiss classes when it’s ruthlessly raining, the rain beats our faces, and our notebooks get wet as we run for the shelter. We get distracted by our fellow learners when they come out during break time, and we cannot concentrate.”

The students are committed to their studies but need a safe, secure place to learn. With your help, we can make this a reality!

How can you help?

Think Malawi is working in partnership with Umodzi Youth Organisation (UYO), a Malawian NGO, to provide a lasting solution. UYO will work together with the local community to help build these classrooms.

We plan to build two classrooms to provide 120 students (and thousands more in the future) with a safe and secure place to learn. But we need your support to fund the essential building materials like cement, bricks, and roofing sheets.

By making a donation today, you are not only building classrooms, but building brighter futures.

About us

Think Malawi are a UK based charity run by trustees and volunteers dedicated to supporting educational projects in Malawi. Umodzi Youth Organisation (UYO) is a youth-led NGO based in Malawi, committed to advancing quality education, promoting the rights of women, and fighting against gender-based violence.

Think Malawi need to raise £12,000 for this project. We have already raised £5,000 and are hoping to raise £2,000 from this crowdfunding campaign.

If we raise more than £2,000, we will use the additional funds in the following order:

  • To make up for any shortfall from our other fundraising activities for this classroom project
  • To pay for chairs and desks for these classrooms, as funding is not currently in place for this
  • To go towards other educational projects in Malawi as directed by the trustees of Think Malawi

Thank you so much for your help!

Any donation, big or small, would be incredibly helpful and very gratefully received!
