Aim

We urgently need new equipment to be able to continue training our members in essential lifesaving skills and increase our membership.

Help us to raise £20,000 to keep our club growing.

Brighton Surf Life Saving Club (BSLSC) is a volunteer run charity formed to save lives and improve the safety of beaches for our local community in Brighton & Hove.

We provide a vital service to Brighton and Hove’s extremely popular beachfront improving the safety of this environment for all within the community who use this space throughout the year.

Our goal is to facilitate and nurture the training of young people and adults in the pursuit of lifesaving, aquatic fitness and respect for the ocean environment.

Surf Lifesaving is nationally recognised and regulated by Surf Lifesaving GB, it represents a lifelong commitment to learn, develop and maintain the skills needed to save lives.

Why are we crowdfunding?

We keep our membership fees as low as possible to make it accessible for everyone. However, the costs to the club of providing safety cover for our training sessions and to support local community events is substantial.

Up-skilling our existing coaches, training new coaches, purchasing safety and first aid equipment doesn't come cheap.

The rescue boards used for our training sessions are expensive bits of kit too, and we urgently need to buy more to replace worn out ones and have enough for our increasing members.

Much of our existing kit is old and damaged and we do not have enough coaching capacity for our expanding membership.

This severely limits our ability to provide safe and suitable lifesaving training for our members to learn the skills they need to progress.

What we want to do

We want to expand our membership to include more people including from previously underrepresented parts of the city, enabling more adults and young people to get active and help to protect their community.

We also need new equipment, coaching and safety cover to relaunch our schools training programme which was halted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through this program we can teach up to 850 local children a year about sea safety, the beach environment and being a lifeguard.

As we develop this programme, we would like to reach schools in different parts of the city.

How we’ll spend the money raised

We will use the money to:

  • train additional level 1 and level 2 volunteer coaches and help others gain the qualifications they need to be able to take on water safety roles. This will allow us to provide appropriate training to our existing members and expand our membership.
  • buy new rescue and training boards to replace our old and damaged equipment.
  • buy the equipment needed to get our recently acquired lifeguard station into full working order including a fixed radio. This will increase our visibility as well as our ability to provide training and local voluntary lifeguard cover.

Our community impact

BSLSC’s skilled and qualified volunteer coaches provide professionally recognised lifesaving training for our children and adult members, enabling them to become competent lifesavers.

Members go on to serve their local community as first responders and voluntary or professional lifeguards working on Brighton & Hove's beaches, nationally for the RNLI or worldwide.

BSLSC works closely with other community organisations. We are the primary source of water safety management for major charity swims and water sports events held in the city.

We are also closely involved with projects which provide safe; supported and controlled access to the sea for special educational needs and disability groups.
