BRASH is raising money to take their play 'Shoefiti' to Salford Arts Theatre in 2018, to mark the start of of their nation-shaking tour.
The BRASH Manifesto
BRASH is Bolshie.
BRASH is Radical.
BRASH is Assertive.
BRASH is Significant.
BRASH is Here.
BRASH isn’t ‘too’ anything. BRASH isn’t ashamed. BRASH won't be silenced.
The voices of young people, women, and North Easterners, are under-represented and undervalued in today’s Britain.
BRASH comprises multiple projects designed to give a platform to North Eastern women from which they can challenge the world. And make the world listen.
BRASHtheatre represents one of these projects, developing work that dramatically interrogates social issues effecting young North Eastern women in Britain today.
Why do we need funding?
In February 2018, BRASHtheatre is excited to be launching its first production at Salford Arts Theatre.
This will mark the start of BRASH’s journey towards nationally platforming the North Eastern woman’s voice through theatre. The production in Salford will enable us to launch this journey by connecting the North East with the West, before touring the production further down South, gradually making our way to London and beyond.

'Shoefiti' at Salford Arts Theatre 2018
Centred around the infamous Shoe Tree in Newcastle, this play focuses on the lives of three teenage girls as they enter the world of Newcastle’s night life for the first time. Based on the real experiences of young Geordie women, Shoefiti is an at times brutally honest exploration of the expectations of and on under-age young women in Newcastle clubbing culture, as well as dealing with themes of class-based public space entitlement, sex education, non-male solidarity, and generational narrative.

You’ve come to the place where birds are made out of leather. Where birds are laced together by buckles and plastic, canvas and elastic, and dog sh*y laces, and all on the basis of memories. Of believin’ in the promise of dreamin’ and wishes. Of losin’ your virginity, of ensurin’ for infinity that the souls of your lost ones will walk in the sole of the shoes that hang from this tree like magpies.
But tonight there's somewhere better on offer.
Where these girls are goin’ young Geordie lasses only hear about in the fairytales told by their Mam’s at bed-times. The floatin’ disco of the toon that looms under the moon on the River that sparkles and booms in the distance out the windas of their council flat rooms.
Watch. Watch ‘em now as this very special species gets dressed for their first night out at The Tuxedo Princess.
Our aim is to use the Salford production as a test pilot to measure the effectiveness of our show in achieving our company’s core aims. We will measure this through audience feedback, ticket sales, follow-up surveys, and pre- and post-show research to investigate the knowledge of and attitude towards young North Eastern women in the Greater Manchester area. We will repeat these measuring actions at all tour locations, and will use all our evidence from the production tour to develop future company actions and target areas in order to achieve our aim of putting the North Eastern woman’s voice at the centre of theatre, culture, and politics all over the country.
The money we raise will make this happen. Specifically, it will go towards:
We are fortunate enough to have been given some valuable in kind support from Salford Arts Theatre, our logo designer Natalie Price, and community development specialists PRAXIS. This has enabled us to launch our own website, develop a bespoke company logo, hire performance technicians, and have rehearsal and production time and space.
But we still need to raise a significant amount of money to raise our project off the ground. Be part of the BRASH journey!
