Our club was founded in 1970 as part of a leisure complex built by Purnell
printing company for its employees.
After the ownership of the company changed hands, the whole site was put up
for sale, and with the aid of grants, members eventually bought the club and
car park.
In 2006, our indoor bowls hall was built and in recent years our clubhouse has
been extended and refurbished. We are the only bowls club within a 10-mile
radius of Paulton with both indoor and outdoor bowling facilities.
The indoor season runs from the end of September until the beginning of April.
The in-house leagues are formed from both members of Purnell Club and
surrounding clubs. There are bowls leagues running every weekday, some
men, some ladies and some mixed. The members also play in County leagues
and County competitions, often played at the weekend.
Purnell Bowls Club have worked successfully with the Bowls Development Alliance as part of the Club Community Hub Program where they have had great success not only promoting the sport but have also implemented recommendations from the BDA to benefit the future of their club. It has however been the fantastic endeavor of the club volunteers that has created the success for the club and without their dedication and hard work the community would not have this outstanding facility.
Getting people active and out of social isolation, working with the community and enhancing mental and physical well-being are just a few of the great initiatives the club are working on whilst building on their existing membership. Their focus on continuing to make the club incredibly diverse and inclusive is also highly commendable.
The money we raise will upgrade the ditches around the bowling green making it not only safer for bowlers but also uphold the high standard the club strives to achieve.
Make a pledge!! Please don't delay if you would like to support us because momentum is key to our success!!!
