Aim

The Book Fairies are helping our partners in Uganda to grow the library! They have been granted land - a great start, and now need our help.

The Book Fairies have supported the KCDO community library in Uganda since very early in our history, summer 2017. We started regularly providing books to the library, which are then taken out to local schools before being returned and sent out again. Since later in 2017 we have supported the library by supporting the employment of a live-in library assistant.

During this latest crisis of the pandemic, the library has stayed essential to this community, providing education around how to stay safe. As schools were closed in the district, learning moved online, and the library has become essential for the use of computers. The Book Fairies, with help from our amazing community, were able to raise funds not only to provide laptops to meet the extra demand, but to repair the roof and other essential works.

We are thrilled to announce that, in response to the success of this modest library and learning centre,  KCDO has been granted some land from the Ugandan government. With this land, they are invited to build a larger library and community centre, to welcome even more neighbours from far and wide. We are delighted to be their main fundraisers for this mission, which simply starts with a patch of land!

This first fundraising push is to flatten the land, put in water and energy supply, secure the land, procure materials such as plants and garden equipment for the outdoors reading area, and prepare the site for the building of the library. This is a very big job and is the start - the land is simply wild at the moment and hasn't been worked for decades.

We will update our fairies and fellow fundraisers with the progress from Lwengo, and there will be many milestones - this is just the start. Please give anything you can to help, as this will truly be a spectacular event when completed, changing the lives of so many people in the district.
