Aftercare & assisted living after rare GBS syndrome diagnosis
Hello everyone,
My husband, was unexpectedly diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) a few days before Christmas in 2025. GBS is a condition where a virus attacks the nervous system causing rapid numbness, weakness and paralysis to the legs, arms, breathing muscles and face. Unfortunately, his case was severe and he had to be intubated in the ICU for almost four weeks.
At present, the doctors have removed the tubes and he’s now breathing on his own. But the road to recovery is long. The damage to his nervous system means he has to learn to do everything again that we all take for granted, like touching your toes and sitting up with ease.
As we’re overseas, our health insurance only covers certain things. Once his condition is stable, they’ll allow him to come home, however, we’ll need to make number of adjustments when that happens to make our home liveable for him. GBS recovery means, he will need long term rehabilitation with various therapists to help his muscles relearn all aspects of mobility. He will also need in-home care and mobilty equipment for daily use to help him recover and manage at home, with assistance.
We’d appreciate whatever you are able to contribute to help get him the care and support that he needs on his road to recovery. Even if it’s just sharing this link as far and as wide as you can.
I’ll be supporting him and the children, as best as I can. I will try to maintain a sense of normality for our family, to help them with the adjustments and life changes for the days, weeks and months ahead.
Thank you for all your love, support, generosity and kindness towards our family during this time.
