Aim: Help us raise funds for much needed upgrades to our unreliable and outdated floodlights!

Who are we?

Blundellsands Lawn Tennis Club was established in 1880 in Crosby, Liverpool. We pride ourselves on providing opportunities for players of all ages and abilities to play socially and competitively in a friendly, inclusive environment.

Why are we crowdfunding?

At Blundellsands Lawn Tennis Club, we have 8 floodlights, across 4 courts. Currently all our floodlights use halogen bulbs which are inefficient and soon to become obsolete. It has already become difficult to source replacement bulbs and so in the long term all 8 will need replacing with LED lights.

We have issues with the existing floodlight system in that the halogen bulbs are often unreliable when they are switched on, especially during the colder weather in the winter months. This often results in having only 2 courts that are fully floodlit.

The winter months are clearly the time when the floodlights are needed the most and the above issues have impacted the availability of courts on winter evenings for team training nights and group coaching sessions. This has resulted in complaints from members and we have been forced to remove floodlighting from our clubspark court listings. We are obviously concerned about the overall impact on our members and so recognise this needs to be rectified in a timely manner.

How we’ll spend the money raised

Our aim is to replace 4 of the floodlight heads with LED lights (on the 2 courts which are not reliably lit). Quotes for this work are currently prohibitively high for a small club of our size, amid the rising upkeep costs of recent times. The money raised in this campaign will allow us to carry out the replacement work on the 4 most unreliable lights, leaving us with 8 floodlit courts before next winter.

Community impact

Replacement of the halogen system with LED floodlight heads would have benefits including:

  • up to 6 hours a day more useable court time during winter months, (and 2 hours+ a day during summer months)
  • ability to advertise court as floodlit on Clubspark which may increase bookings from pay for play users
  • increased energy efficiency (up to 80% less energy), therefore reduced energy consumption and bills
  • more environmentally friendly product (no toxic elements requiring specialist disposal to prevent environmental harm)
  • futureproofing lighting system as bulbs last up to 5 times longer and are easily replaceable

The increase in available playing time during summer is especially beneficial for league match nights, allowing more matches to be played to completion.

During winter months the additional 6 hours per day afforded by the working floodlights will allow increased numbers of members to be able to book courts in the evenings (often the only time many members can play after work/school), allow increased hours for both junior and adult coaching sessions and team practice nights.
