We're looking for support to capture & release the 'Bloody Elle- a gig musical' cast recording by Writer, Actor and Musician Lauryn Redding

Why did I write Bloody Elle?

When I wrote ‘Bloody Elle’ I knew I wanted it to be more than ‘just a show.’ Growing up I saw no female queer representation- It was pretty barren and even now, in 2021, it still feels like it is a desert out there for female queerdom- And even when you’re lucky enough to find one(!) Lesbian storylines are often thrown in for effect, fetishised, ‘a phase’ or for the male gaze.

I wanted to write love how I experienced it- and how I wish I could have seen it. I wrote Bloody Elle- Not just for queer women to see themselves represented truthfully- But for their parents/friends/families/colleagues/fellow humans to see it too. And to show the world- our love is same as yours.

What happened during the run at the Manchester Royal Exchange?

During the run of Bloody Elle at the Royal Exchange, the outpouring of thanks and love from audience members was overwhelming. From parents thanking me for understanding their child better- People thanking me for seeing themselves represented, some even seeing the show and having to strength to come out to themselves or to family- People who identified with the show and didn’t think they would.

This show has helped and changed people.

Why do you want to record and release the soundtrack?

Making the recording available allows us to reach and develop our audience for this production across the country and the world. LGBTQ+ can relate to the music and story of Bloody Elle, and our allies can help better understand what I means to live through it. Releasing the soundtrack allows us to build interest in the show at times when we can't fully stage it, but also gives opportunities for more people to discover the production - which might just help them get through something they felt quite alone with.

Why should I support?

I believe ‘Bloody Elle’ matters and deserves the platform and space to reach it’s full potential. It’s a show that tackles class, and queerness- alongside live music and humour… But at its heart- it is a Lesbian love story. And Lesbian narratives need support. Representation is key and it’s about time we celebrate queer female love in all it’s glory - it is after all... just a love story - I guess.
