To raise money to cover the costs of planning consultants to write an objection to the updated designs to the Gamecock site.
Since 2020 our community has been fighting a popular campaign against plans to turn the former Gamecock pub into a student tower block. We have so far received wide support, including from our MP, our Councillors, our housing associations, our GP and hundreds of local residents.
In May 2022 we succeeded in persuading the planning committee to reject the original plans for the site. Now, the developer Curlew has come back with an amended design - in the hope that this will convince city planners to vote it through. The changes? They've taken two storeys off the tower – from 13, to 11.
But, we believe our objections still stand. The updated design will still be the tallest building around – out of character for our estate. It will cause years of disruption when being built. It will overshadow our gardens, and have severe impact on our neighbours' mental health. The 200 students who eventually move in will be a severe pressure on already overstretched local amenities.
In short, it's just not the right proposal for this site. Hulme and our estate, already have it's fair share of students – it doesn't need any more.
So our campaign continues. We need to raise £600 to pay our planning consultants to update their representation for the new site. This will equip our campaign and our representatives with the planning arguments we need to make the case again for rejection.
We couldn't have got this far without your support. Please then, if you can, give generously and help us Block the Block!
