Who are we?
We are a very active lawn bowling club. We have a beautiful grass green and an all weather surface. Our Summer season runs from April until the end of September. From October - April many of the club members play bowls throughout the winter months, in all weather conditions, on the artificial green. We cater for all ages but the majority of the club are between 50-90, we are currently the largest club in Hertfordshire. We are a lifeline for many of our members during the long winter months ,providing company, outdoor activity helping with both mental& physical fitness safeguarding their wellbeing. We reach out to the younger community working with the local high school providing alternative PE lessons. We offer Scout and youth groups opportunities to try bowls.
Why are we crowdfunding?
Our artificial green over the past couple of years has become extremely popular in the winter months. However, the green was put down over 15 years ago and it is long past its life span. The green is frequently flooding and the under-base is breaking down. After an expert inspection we were shocked to find that there were some major faults in the original build of the green meaning a simple replacement of the carpet surface was out of the question. Replacement quotes (£75000) was a realisation that we would have got to seek funding. We have currently raised around £40000 but we need help to reach our target.
How we’ll spend the money raised
All donations will be used sole for the purpose of removing and replacing the current artificial green.
Community impact
The artificial green is the main training green for newcomers and taster sessions. We offer many opportunities for all age groups. Plus 2 days a week around 40 + club members meet to play throughout the winter months. Throughout the rest of the week winter competition matches are played.
Students from the nearby Girls High School have enjoyed bowls PE lessons at the club. Organisations as diverse as local Scout groups and the Women's Institute have also tasted sampler sessions at BSBC. We continue to get youth groups enquire through our website for sessions
