 New stretch target

We would be overjoyed if we raise even more than our target, as this would enable us to buy more equipment and resources to improve our facilities.

We are Fizzpop, Birmingham's Makerspace. A Makerspace is exactly what it sounds like - a space full of tools and equipment that members can use to make things. But it's so much more. Makerspaces are community centres and event spaces for people that "do" - in fact, a Makerspace democratises "doing" in a world where many people feel unable to. Makerspaces create makers - innovators, repairers, tinkerers, engineers - and empower them with the lathes, welders, laser cutters and industrial sewing machines they need to make. All for less than the cost of most gym memberships.

Named in honour of one of Birmingham's many "do-ers", Fizzpop is a member-led organisation that until recently was based in Floodgate Street. Covid hit us hard, forcing us to close the space - and on top of this, our landlord refused to renew our lease. So early this year we moved to a new building which had a sound shell but required significant renovations to make it suitable - which we carefully budgeted out and, with the herculean efforts of many members, set about completing.

Since the budget was made prices have rocketed - and that's left us with a space that's around 80% ready for makers, but with significant material shortfalls. We have built and carefully fire-compartmentalised rooms for specific activities, but the fixings and fittings for the fire doors that separate the rooms are around £300 each. We have designed every room with accessibility in mind, but we still need to convert the entrance and fire exit. We still need to finish the kitchen, the suspended ceilings, dust extraction, plastering and electrical work - and we estimate that we’ll need £7500 to complete the space, including materials and specialist contractors.

This space is so much more than a workshop - Makerspaces really do change lives, be it confidence-building through skill development, new careers and ventures through experimentation and innovation, or from the kinship of like-minded people who don't otherwise have a space to meet. We've taken the opportunity to make this new space more accessible, and to ensure we can host many more people. But we need to get it finished first. If you can help, we would really appreciate your donation.

And hey, if you are a maker (or, if you want to be) maybe you should join us too!
