Patch Plays, a theatre company focusing on animal ethics and sustainability, are partnering with the zero-waste Greenhouse Theatre to bring new children's musical 'Birdie's Adventures in the Animal Kingdom' to the stage.
We are raising money to pay for rehearsal space in London, and cover costs for all of the creatives involved.
‘Birdie’s Adventures in the Animal Kingdom’ is a new family musical by Grace Joy Howarth and directed by Anastasia Bunce. It aims to raise awareness to animal welfare, the environment and the climate crisis in this adventure for 5-9 year olds and their families.
The Animal Kingdom is in chaos! The icebergs are melting, the sea levels are rising, and all the animals blame the dastardly Destroyer for the destruction of their habitats.
10-year-old Londoner, Birdie, is celebrating her birthday, when she discovers a talking bird, called Robin. Together Birdie and Robin fly around the world on a mission to save their fellow animals, protect the environment and defeat The Destroyer.
They journey to the ocean, the jungle and the farm, learning of the struggles of an ensemble of lovable animals. From Rory the Polar Bear, to Monty the Monkey, to Cluck the Christmas Turkey, they need our help.
‘Birdie’s Adventures in the Animal Kingdom’ explores how one little girl can positively impact the global issues we face today. We aim to inspire children to engage with their natural environment, bolstering their imaginations and empathy through this fun family adventure show. It is a lighthearted way to introduce children to issues surrounding climate change and animal ethics, and teaches that we can all make a difference.
What will the money raised be spent on?
Making theatre is so expensive, and even covering rehearsal space and actors fees for three performances costs thousands of pounds!
We need:
£500 to pay for rehearsal space
£1000 to pay for expenses for the cast and creatives
We are working on a profit-share basis, so any additional money will go towards better set, costume, props, and paying everyone more fairly. If we exceed targets, we will hire musicians so we can have live music as opposed to singing to pre-recorded instrumentals.
We are offering some exciting rewards for those that back the project!
What have we achieved so far?
In 2022 we had a successful Arts Council Funded period of Research and Development at the Polka Theatre and received a seed commission for a performance Harrow Arts Centre, where we carried out workshops with local children and brought Birdie's story to life, with a cast of 6 wonderful actors, and a band of 4 incredible musicians!
We are now in the process of developing the show to make it more suitable for a longer London run, and a UK tour. If we successfully fund this version of the show, who knows where Birdie may fly next!
