Aim

Help fund Biofuelwatch's UK campaigns to challenge Drax and harmful biomass and biofuels, protecting forests, climate and communities.

Help us challenge harmful biomass and biofuels in the UK

Biofuelwatch is a small environmental research and campaigning organisation working to expose the damage caused by large-scale industrial bioenergy and to promote genuinely climate-friendly alternatives.

We were founded in the UK in 2006 and have spent almost two decades investigating the impacts of biomass and biofuels, supporting communities and campaigners, and challenging policies and subsidies that allow these industries to present themselves as climate solutions.

Why we need your support

The UK continues to provide substantial public support for biomass energy, despite growing evidence of its impacts on forests, climate and communities.

One of our key campaigns is challenging subsidies for Drax, the UK's biggest biomass power station. Drax burns millions of tonnes of wood pellets every year, much of it made from trees sourced from biodiverse forests in North America and elsewhere. Despite the environmental and climate concerns surrounding this model, the UK Government has committed to further financial support for Drax beyond 2027.

We believe public money should support genuinely low-carbon solutions, not an industry that drives demand for wood from forests and risks increasing rather than reducing emissions.

Our UK work also looks beyond Drax. We investigate other biomass developments and biofuel policies, challenge industry greenwashing, provide evidence to policymakers, work with local and national campaign groups, and raise public awareness about the impacts of supposedly "sustainable" bioenergy.

What does Biofuelwatch actually do?

We are a small team, but our work has an impact far beyond our size. We combine detailed research with campaigning and advocacy, working with community groups, environmental organisations, scientists, journalists and policymakers.

Our work includes:

  • researching and exposing the environmental and climate impacts of biomass and biofuels;
  • producing evidence-based reports and briefings for policymakers, journalists and campaigners;
  • challenging government subsidies and policies that support harmful biomass energy;
  • supporting communities affected by biomass and biofuel developments;
  • working with coalitions and campaign partners across the UK and internationally;
  • exposing greenwashing by companies promoting biomass and biofuels as climate solutions; and
  • helping build public understanding of why burning forests and growing crops for fuel is not a genuine solution to the climate crisis.

Your donation can make a difference

As a small organisation, individual donations are particularly important to us. They help us maintain the capacity to respond quickly when new policies, projects or threats emerge, produce independent research, support campaigning and make sure that the voices of communities and organisations challenging harmful bioenergy are heard.

We want to see forests protected, communities listened to, public money directed towards genuinely low-carbon solutions, and climate policy based on real emissions reductions rather than industry greenwashing.

Please donate today and help us continue the fight for a genuinely sustainable energy future.
