To hire an ecologist to do a survey of Figge's Marsh and the surrounding area to report on the current biodiversity and how to improve it.
Since the Friends of Figge's Marsh started nine years ago, we've worked with the council and idverde to bring enhancements to the park, including improving biodiversity. The friends group (volunteers) did a survey a few years ago of local residents and park users, and people responded that they would like to see more biodiversity, and we agree! It's also important to remember that many people use the large open field for games, picnics, exercise and more. So we thought it would be a good idea to hire an ecologist to survey the site, see what evidence they can find of different flora and fauna, look at environmental records of the area, and produce a report of recommendations for enhancements we can do that would work best for the site.
We will use these recommendations to apply for a grant for a project to implement these recommendations (subject to approval from the council, who are supportive). The grant would also provide for training volunteers in identification, so we can spot whether our improvements have actually worked. Sometimes it can take a while for species to flourish.
We'd also like to use funds raised through this crowdfunder to fill in the gaps in some of our shrub beds - we maintain the beds at the north and south ends of the park and also the raised bed by Laing's Corner.
If we don't reach our target, then we can receive a simpler report from the ecologist and/or we can do our best to improve biodiversity through creating habitats and planting things that we think will best support biodiversity in the park, depending on what we raise.
Many thanks for any support you are able to provide!
