This wonderful, unique event, Biggar's Hogmanay Bonfire, held to 'burn out the old, burn in the new' has been in the headlines over the past years. Changes to the way events are controlled by South Lanarkshire Council means that costs for insurance, traffic management and first aid are now all the responsibility of Biggar Community Council. The minimum cost to run the event each year is approximately £6500, costs which cannot be sustained by the Council.
The Bonfire Committee was successful in receiving a windfarm grant for last year (2022) as well as raising £3395 through generous donations from our supporters towards our crowd funding page. However, we need this to continue to give us a 'fighting fund' to ensure events in the years to come can go ahead.
We fully appreciate that there are many challenges to face in this current climate of rising costs etc but it was great to have the fire back again last year after cancellation of the previous two, albeit a slightly smaller one. I'm sure you will all agree it's a fantastic tradition and it is one of those events that make Biggar 'Biggar'!
Please consider supporting our fire.
Our target is to raise another £5000 this year which will go some way to ensuring we have sufficient funds to plan for 2024.
