This is a dance-based class for wheelchair-bound people with good cognitive ability wishing to engage in a physically challenging class.
TCD have previously delivered sessions such as Aqua Zumba at Hollybank School, Bollywood sessions with a number of disability support charities, chair based aerobics and activities which are open to the public and musical theatre projects with children and adult mobility support services.
The facilities in our area which have dance as an inclusive leisure activity are very few. We would like to offer wheelchair dance sessions aimed at those who have excellent cognitive function and good upper body strength for classes which feature different dance genres. The classes present a socialising opportunity as well as introducing this underrated sport to a wider audience.
Anyone can dance and a wheelchair should not be a barrier. Dance as an inclusive sport opens up many doors to people who are physically challenged. It's a fun, recreational activity and it's a great way to meet new people. While you’re having fun moving to music you’re getting all the health benefits of a good workout, maintaining healthy bones, improving posture and muscle strength. It also increases balance, co-ordination and flexibility. Confidence and self-esteem are given a boost through participation and it's empowering as it increases physical and emotional well-being. What a fabulous stress-buster!
TCD have the only two qualified Paradance instructors in West Yorkshire, Rachel Walmsley and Taylor Dunstan, and the class is aimed at those who wish to challenge stereotypes by showcasing the grace and skill that chair-based dancers can display through the medium of dance. Through learning this new skill, a wheelchair user will be able to join in social gatherings and special occasions and dance along with friends and family.
We would like to purchase a wheelchair from ParaDance, which would cost around £500 and to also keep the sessions free making them financially accessible for all.
