An 8 week programme introducing boxing across cultures, age groups, gender and backgrounds in a safe and welcoming environment

Background to Rathfriland Cross Community Boxing Club
Rathfriland Amateur Boxing Club (ABC) is more than a sporting club. We are committed to developing the whole person, not just the athlete. Our work focuses on building respect, empathy, discipline, hard work, and understanding, helping young people grow into confident, responsible individuals who are prepared for life’s challenges.
Over many years, Rathfriland ABC has become a trusted cross-community hub, offering safe, positive opportunities for young people and families to come together. Through boxing, we teach essential life skills such as resilience, self-control, teamwork, and mutual respect, skills that extend far beyond the ring.
We have a strong track record of delivering programmes that successfully combine sport, personal development, and community connection, particularly for those who may not otherwise engage in structured activities.
Project Aim
Beyond the Ropes: Crossing Cultures, Crossing Generations aims to use boxing as a tool to bring people together across cultural backgrounds, generations, and genders, with a strong focus on women and girls.
The project seeks to:
Reduce barriers to participation in sport
Increase confidence, wellbeing, and physical activity
Strengthen cross-community relationships
Create lasting opportunities for people who are often underrepresented or excluded
What We Will Do
We will deliver an 8-week series of inclusive, non-contact boxing programmes in accessible community settings, rather than traditional gyms, to ensure everyone feels welcome.
The programme will include:
Women and girls-only boxing sessions to provide a safe and supportive introduction
Intergenerational sessions where girls, women, and older adults train together
Cross-cultural engagement, working with local community and cultural groups
Optional mixed community sessions for those who wish to progress
Leadership and volunteering opportunities, especially for women and young people
All sessions will focus on fitness, skills, confidence, and enjoyment, not competition.

Why We Are Crowdfunding
Crowdfunding from our dedicated supporters is essential to help us:
Purchase boxing equipment and protective gear
Cover coaching and wellbeing/lifestyle facilitators costs
Remove financial barriers for participants
Offer free sessions to those who need them most
Your support allows us to ensure that no one is excluded due to cost, and that the programme can reach people who would otherwise miss out.
Every contribution helps us create safe, inclusive spaces where individuals and families can grow, connect, and thrive.

We Will Engage Participants by:
Working closely with schools, community groups, women’s organisations, and support services
Using trusted local networks to reach those who are not currently involved in sport
Creating welcoming, non-intimidating environments
Offering flexible session times and culturally sensitive delivery
Encouraging word-of-mouth through families and community champions
Our focus is on long-term engagement, not short-term attendance.

This project will benefit:
Women and girls who lack access to safe sporting opportunities
Young people who are disengaged or lacking confidence
Older adults, particularly women, at risk of isolation
People from different cultural and community backgrounds
Families and the wider Rathfriland community
The impact goes beyond physical activity, participants gain confidence, friendships, life skills, and a sense of belonging.
