For many children, the summer holidays are a time to enjoy a well-earned break from school. But for thousands of families, they also bring an added worry—how to afford the extra cost of feeding children every day when free school meals are no longer available.

No parent should have to choose between paying the bills and putting a hot meal on the table for their child.

That’s why I launched Summer Plates Bexhill.

Working in partnership with the fantastic team at Hughies Café in Bexhill, we’ve created a simple but meaningful initiative that allows children and young people aged 16 and under to enjoy a hot meal from a specially selected menu for just £1 throughout August.

A freshly prepared café meal would normally cost several pounds. To make the £1 price possible, I’ve personally made a significant donation to launch the scheme, with Hughies Café generously absorbing the remaining cost of each meal. Together, we’re making sure that families pay just £1, because we believe every child deserves access to a nutritious meal, regardless of their circumstances.

This isn’t funded by the council or taxpayers. It’s simply a local business and a local councillor working together to support our community.

But we want to do more.

Every pound you donate will go directly towards subsidising children’s meals through Summer Plates Bexhill. Your generosity will help us provide more meals, support more families, and, if funding allows, keep the initiative running for as long as possible.

A donation of £10 could help provide several subsidised meals. £25 or £50 will help even more local children enjoy a hot meal during the holidays. Whatever you can give, you will be making a real difference to a family in Bexhill.

This isn’t about politics. It isn’t about publicity. It’s about neighbours helping neighbours and making sure that, in our community, no child has to go hungry simply because it’s the school holidays.
