To create a 'nature trail' that links up Bevendean and Moulsecoomb's hugely under-used beautiful green spaces.
Local residents from both Bevendean and Moulsecoomb have come together to create a 'nature trail' that will link up some of the very much under-used gorgeous green spaces that we have in this location.
This area of high poverty, on the outskirts of Brighton, lies on the doorstep of the beautiful South Downs, yet many people do not currently utilise the green spaces we have and sadly many residents are not even aware that some of these public green spaces exist or know how to access them.
To encourage an appreciation of nature and for improved physical and mental health for all the community, from the very young to the elderly, we are developing the 'Bevendean & Moulsecoomb Nature Trail' that will be launched this summer.
Our green spaces include Farm Green Park, Bevendean Community Garden, Bevendean Down and Moulsecoomb Woods.
We will commission an artist to create a beautiful illustrated map, which will mark out the trail linking up these green spaces and will point out what might be spotted there.... badgers, tadpoles, mushrooms, bats, trees, butterflies, wildflowers, birds etc.
We are raising funds to ensure that every home in Lower Bevendean, Higher Bevendean, Meadowview and Moulsecoomb will receive a free copy of the beautifully illustrated 'Bevendean and Moulsecoomb Nature Trail map'.
The map will also be made available in public places such as libraries, health centres and community centres.
Funds will also cover an expert a 'lead' nature walk will take place four times a year, covering all seasons and individuals and families will be encouraged throughout the year to walk the trail alone or in groups (ie local primary school classes).
The map will also show access points along the trail and will mark out the best access points for people with mobility issues and for wheelchairs and baby buggies.
The map will also show the routes to green spaces that are just outside of our route area (Wild Park, Stanmer Park, Hodshrove Woods, Wollards Orchard etc)
Members of the community have conceived the idea of our very own nature trail, to bring our community together, to enjoy the fresh air and health benefits of being outdoors.
We look forward to seeing local residents having picnics in the woods along the route and learning about the nature that is on our doorsteps.
We live in a time when children no longer play outside and people have forgotten how wonderful nature is. Our launch of the Bevendean and Moulsecoomb Nature Trail will give our community the opportunity and the encouragement to experience something that may be new to them and that they can enjoy over and over again and which will improve both the physical and mental health of people of all ages living here.
