We are trying to raise £50,000 to renovate our 400 year old bells to ensure they continue ringing into the next century and beyond!

by St James' Church, Bramley - Bell Preservation Fund in Tadley, Hampshire, United Kingdom

The historic Grade 1 listed church of St James in Bramley, Hampshire has been welcoming worshippers since the C12th. The tower, built in 1636, houses eight bells. Five of the bells date back to 1638 when Charles I was on the throne, the sixth was added in 1883 and the final two bells were added at the time of the Accession of Queen Elizabeth II in 1952.

A recent inspection revealed that a substantial amount of work will need to be carried out to ensure that the bells can continue to be rung safely. In particular, the oldest bells are hung on timber headstocks and two of these are cracked.

The bells will need to be removed from the tower and transported to the Loughborough Bell Foundry for renovation. The mechanics that allow the bells to ring via a system of pulleys, bearings, clappers and wheels, have been in situ since the mid nineteenth century so the vast majority of these components will have to be modernised and replaced, for example the timber headstocks need to be removed and modern metal headstocks incorporated in their place.

The cost of this work is £50,000 and our fundraising has got off to a great start with £5,050 being received so far.  We want to build on this in the months ahead and all donations, large or small will be gratefully received.

Over the years, these historic bells have been rung to welcome parishioners to Sunday worship, to celebrate weddings and baptisms and to mark significant events and historic anniversaries such as the late Queen’s Diamond and Platinum Jubilees and the King’s Coronation. The bells are for everyone in our community; both the Scouts and Guides have visited the bell chamber to learn about these instruments and visitors of all ages enjoyed chiming the bells during a church open day. We regularly ring for Bramley Primary School when they hold services in the church.

Through this fundraising, we hope to be able to ring for many more such events and ensure that the typically English sound of church bells continues to be enjoyed in Bramley and beyond.

The Project has the support of our Incumbent and the PCC and this work should future-proof the installation until the 23rd Century!
