Aim

Help me sow the seed of my street food business in Newcastle!

Beanie Bun is a street food concept offering handmade plant-based burgers mostly comprised of beans.

My aim is to raise enough funds to support the purchasing of catering equipment. This includes a 3x3 gazebo, gas grill and fryer, propane gas cylinders, utensils and public liability insurance.

I am a recent graduate of the University of the Arts London with a BA in Fine Art. I (Dionne) founded Beanie Bun in October 2018, a few weeks after a road traffic accident. I was knocked off my bike while cycling home from work in South East London. The collision left me in a bit of a state so I moved back home to Newcastle to heal. At the time l was working BOH at Gourmet Burger Kitchen.

*Disclaimer - while the idea was convinced in October 2018, a few months passed before l decided to pursue it.

Started from the bottom...

Once fully healed, l plastered the city of Newcastle with my CV in the hopes of landing a job. As the weeks passed, so did my hopes; after a few deja vu weeks of tonally disappointing emails, I was done. I decided to do what l did best, create. Having worked in hospitality for many years, l would utilise my varied skills including recipe creation and so began the research and development phase where l trialled many a recipe before establishing the first iteration of the Beanie Bun menu which includes a Mexican-inspired burger shown in the display picture.

(Charred red pepper, red chilli, mixed beans and sweetcorn patty, cashew crema and spicy salsa, avocado (optional) and tortilla chips. The 'Mexi' mimics the savoury and tangy flavours of Central American we know and love!)

So far I have made three delicious (if l may say so myself) burgers - good enough to tempt herbivores and entice even the most caveman of carnivores. HOwEveR, I need your support to bring this scrummy idea to fruition. Your contributions will necessitate for Beanie Bun to sprout from the grounds of the Quayside Sunday Market where l will begin my journey.

...Help me get here

Business frills aside, I hope Beanie Bun will stand as an emblem of black creativity in a city with few black-female-owned businesses or black-owned businesses, period.

Please endeavour to support your local businesses wherever you are.

Thank you!
