Beacon CC Artificial Wicket Fundraiser

Aim

We aim to install an ECB approved artificial wicket to the square. supporting the growing youth and women's sections at the club.

Who are we?

We are Beacon CC, a small village cricket club, located in West Cornwall providing opportunities for all ages and abilities to get involved with the game! We have 6 youth age groups, supporting over 100 boys and girls, with players the aged of 5-16. We also have a growing women's section who competed (very successfully) in the softball league for the first time last year, and 3 mens teams including a mid-week team and two Saturday teams playing in the Cornwall Cricket League (Division 5 West and Cornwall County 1).

Why are we crowdfunding?

We are crowdfunding to install an ECB approved artificial wicket on our square. Our square is currently made of 8 grass pitches, which makes it considerably smaller than other clubs in our surrounding area who have up to 12 pitches. The result of this is a limited number of pitches that can be used throughout the year, which particularly affects our youth, women's and evening league teams, because pitches are prioritised for Saturday league games. These teams are required to reuse a single pitch throughout the year, which presents issues of wear and inconsistency, this directly limits the number of fixtures and practice that can take place within a week, and currently reduces the amount of cricket that we can offer to these groups. By installing an ECB approved artificial wicket we will be able to overcome these issues, providing a reliable, consistent, weather-proof playing surface that will serve all teams at the club, but will particularly benefit the youth, women's and mid-week teams who are currently impacted by pitch availability. The result of this is that the club will be able to engage more women and girls in the sport by having the capacity to continue growing the women's section, as well as promoting activity in under 16's by providing more opportunity for our youth members to play cricket, and transition into the adult sides by playing for the mid-week XI that are currently disadvantaged by Saturday league fixtures limiting the availability of pitches for their games in the week.

How we’ll spend the money raised

All of the money raised will be spent on the installation of an ECB approved artificial wicket. This will be done through a specialist sports constructor with experience installing artificial wickets across the country. The process involves 6 steps and can take up to 2 weeks. The funding will cover the cost of installation and removal of waste material/soil.

Community impact

The ECB approved artificial wicket will  benefit all of the members at Beacon Cricket Club. Specifically it will provide match and practice opportunities for over 100 youth players, and it will help us to continue developing our women's section, that now supports over 20 members. The artificial wicket will allow us to continue growing these sections of the club, supporting more people in our community to access low-cost sport and remain active.
