WHO ARE WE?
The British Bird of Prey Centre is the only native species centre in the UK, dedicated to the education and conservation of British raptors.
“No one will protect what they don't care about; and no one will care about what they have never experienced" - David Attenborough
That’s why bringing people face-to-face with these incredible birds is at the heart of everything we do.
For the past 7 years, we’ve proudly cared for our remarkable birds and inspired thousands of visitors each year at the National Botanic Garden of Wales. Through close-up encounters, educational displays, and conservation work, we’ve helped foster a deep appreciation for these vital species.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Now, it’s time for the next chapter. We’re moving to a fantastic new site in Idole, Carmarthen, where we will become a stand-alone tourist attraction — and a true hub for education, conservation, and community engagement.
Our vision is to create an exciting, interactive space where visitors of all ages can:
🦅 Get up close to incredible birds from around the UK
🦅 Learn about conservation and the vital role these species play in our ecosystem
🦅 Be inspired by the magic of flight and the wonder of nature
We need to raise £100,000 to finalise the funding for the first phase of development at our new home. This will allow us to:
🌿 Build spacious, enriching new aviaries
🌿 Create a state-of-the-art indoor flying arena for year-round displays
🌿 Develop dedicated education and conservation spaces — helping us reach even more schools, families, and visitors
🌿 Create exciting, fun, interactive spaces that combine technology and hands-on games to engage and inspire visitors of all ages
With your help, we can build a truly unique experience — one that will benefit both our birds and our community for years to come.
WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS
At the heart of everything we do is a simple belief: people won’t protect what they don’t care about, and they won’t care about what they’ve never experienced.
Our mission is to create inspiring, accessible experiences that connect people of all ages and backgrounds with British birds of prey, building a stronger future for both wildlife and communities.
By supporting this project, you’ll be helping us continue and expand the vital work we already do:
Education & Schools
Education is at the core of our mission. We deliver hands-on learning experiences to schools from across Wales, through curriculum-linked workshops and interactive bird displays that spark curiosity and inspire a lifelong love of nature.
Our sessions are designed to be inclusive and accessible to all learners. Our goal is to make bird conservation and natural history an experience that is exciting, engaging, and welcoming for everyone.
Conservation & Rural Crime Support
Our work goes far beyond public displays, we are actively involved in bird conservation, species recovery, and support efforts to tackle rural and wildlife crime across Wales.
We are proud to contribute to larger-scale conservation initiatives, including:
✅ The Eagle Reintroduction Wales project — working to return these iconic birds to Welsh skies
✅ Supporting the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) Cudyll Cymru project — helping monitor and protect birds of prey across Wales
We collaborate with a range of local and national organisations to:
✅ Provide safe care for rescued and seized birds
✅ Offer expertise to assist with wildlife crime investigations
✅ Deliver public education to raise awareness of illegal wildlife trade and broader conservation issues
Through this work, we aim to play an active role in safeguarding the future of British raptors and promoting greater understanding and protection of wildlife throughout our region.
Community Engagement
We believe that birds have the power to bring joy, connection, and healing, and we are passionate about sharing that with our entire community.
That’s why we will be running a dedicated Community Month for local residents, offering:
✅ Free or discounted entry
✅ Special sessions for local groups
✅ Tailored workshops & activities
Our new home will ensure the Centre is a place of welcome, learning, and connection for everyone.
PHASE ONE: Building Our New Home
We’ve already made huge progress behind the scenes: we’ve found a fantastic new site in Idole, Carmarthen, and secured a combination of loan and grant funding to support the project.
Now, we need your help to raise the final £100,000 to make this exciting first phase a reality, and to ensure we can build the core spaces our birds, visitors, and local community deserve.
Here’s what Phase One will deliver:
🌿 Larger, Enriching Aviaries
We’ll be building spacious, purpose-designed aviaries that provide the best possible welfare for our birds. Visitors will be able to experience British birds of prey up close in safe, enriching environments.
🦅 State-of-the-Art Indoor Flying Arena
A transformational new addition which will allow us to run flight displays and demonstrations year-round, regardless of the weather. It will also support expanded school and community programmes, enabling immersive experiences that highlight the power, beauty, and intelligence of these incredible birds.
☕ Café
A welcoming, on-site café where visitors can relax, meet friends, and enjoy refreshments — helping us create a positive visitor experience and generate sustainable income to support the Centre’s future.
🛍️ Retail Space
A carefully curated shop offering bird-themed gifts, books, toys, and educational materials — another valuable revenue stream, and a way to extend our educational message beyond the visit.
🎮 Interactive Activity Centre
A fun, exciting new space where visitors of all ages can explore interactive technology and hands-on games, deepening their understanding of birds of prey, conservation, and the wider natural world.
Phase One will give us the core facilities we need to:
✅ Provide the highest standards of care for our birds
✅ Offer engaging, inclusive education for schools and visitors of all ages
✅ Enable year-round flying experiences
✅ Generate sustainable income to support ongoing conservation and education work
✅ Create a welcoming, accessible hub for the local community and visitors from across Wales and beyond
Whether you donate money, time, or skills, you’ll be playing a crucial role in something special — and lasting.
